Broken Head Stud? Leak issue

Hello everyone. Just got a PPI on the 86 Targa 3.2 and the mechanic has found these leaks during the inspection. He is doing a leak down test tomorrow but wanted to see if any of you suspect this could be a broken head stud? Or is it another type of leak? I understand not until compression test is done it’s hard to speculate but if anyone has seen this before I’d like to hear any feedback. Thanks

When my 3.2 had the head studs come loose (not break) the leak was between the cylinder and the head. Not at the cylinder to case like yours. My guess is you have oil leaking from the triangle of doom, down the side of your case.

Just a guess....

Edit: yes, I was looking at it wrong. Head to cylinder leak, looks like loose or broken head studs could be the cause.

Drain the oil and pull off the lower rocker covers and then you will see if any studs are broken. Compression test may not show much.

Also, have your mechanic pull the valve covers to confirm condition of head studs.

That leak pictured is in the middle-rear of the engine at cylinders #2 and #1 and therefore the triangle of death is less likely? My experience has been the death triangle leak is usually closer to the engine-trans connection and around the oil cooler near cylinder #6 on the upper right side of the picture below. It's the vacant hole for the thermostat and the breather cover opening. The oil runs off that flat surface and finds it's way down to the oil cooler side of the engine, or onto cylinder #3 if the breather cover gasket is leaking. Sometimes the breather hose is crusty and cracked and that leaks onto the other side near #6 again.....



That picture of the leak looks like a cylinder to cylinder head leak since the oil is concentrated right between the top of the outer part of the cylinder (not the base) and the combustion chamber side of the head.

Looks normal to me, could have a broken stud, u need to rule that out for sure, but it’s more unusual to see cylinder to head bone dry.

That happened to my engine as well. At 150,000 miles two head studs had backed out and become loose. They did not break, they did not pull out, just backed out. I guess Hans did not get the torque right back when the engine was built at the factory.

I replaced all the head studs, rod bolts and so on with ARP bolts.

Very normal you say..but in my book no oil leak should be there ..at all
Here is mine resealed back in 2009 38K later dry as a Sahara desert..i`d say
