Rear Window Seal Trim?

This may have been covered.
I'd like to fix the rear window trim. See picture.
It looks like there is a piece that clips onto and over the aluminum channel that holds the seal in place. What parts do I need? Are the "clip-on" pieces still available? I also need the joining pieces that are like Part#911-541-921-01-70K-OEM.

It looks like your pieces are missing a big chunk of aluminum. The 2 pieces should come together then you have a 1 inch piece to slide over the seam.

It looks like PP has parts for the two halves called molding.
Part#911-545-912-00-70K-OEM (right)
and
Part#911-545-911-00-70K-OEM (left)
Then I need the mating pieces.
How hard are these to install?
Please explain if you have done it.
I might have a body shop do the install if they have experience.

That's what I was thinking.. I might need to reinstall the whole window?

Can someone comment more on if the aluminum should come closer together before the trim pieces go on? Also, please recommend a place that knows how to do the rear window replacement in the San Jose area. I've been to German Autobody. I thinking to try Yeaman Autobody near Palo Alto today.

I'm afraid to say that you probably need to reinstall the rear window. You'll need a new rubber gasket and aluminum trim piece (if your car is an '88 that piece would have been plastic). Look on the archive of this site to see how it's done -- I have a lengthy thread somewhere when i did this a few years ago. If you decide to get this done professionally, you'll need to find someone who works on classic cars, and who knows how to pull the gasket over the window frame with a piece of rope. Modern windows I believe are glued in, so the rope technique is a lost art.

It's worth doing, because water will come in through the rear window.

Mine is an 89. I think you are correct. I'm going to a place later today that should have the skills. I'll dig deeper in the site. Thanks much for your reply and info.

Found your post - good job on th writeup.
A post there says that the 89 used 964 glass and seal.
This might make things easier?

This could be because Porsche built both the 3.2 and 3.6 964 in the same year. I have the 3.2L.

I'm looking in PET. I don't see the "insert" piece - goes inside the rubber seal.
The 911 numbers I assume are for the 3.2L cars. The 964 numbers for for the 89 964.
Numbers so far for 89 3.2L:
Rear window with brake light - 911 631 073 00
Rubber seal - 911 545 225 00
Rear Left Molding - 911 545 911 00
Rear Right Molding - 911 545 912 00
Molding Joint - 911 541 921 01 (2 required)

Please help confirm.

okay - you all are probably getting tired of this....
I finally found the Porsche glass "expert".
Very familiar with old Porsche glass e.g. 1989.
He said my seal is odd - there is a wrong part inside the seal - there shouldn't be anything there and that's why it isn't in PET.

Sorry I didn't reply right away to your questions -- stuck at work

Anyway, if I remember correctly, you first get the rubber window gasket and fit it around the window (outside of the car). That will involve fitting the wires for the rear defrost; I think you have to poke some holes in the gasket, which is trickier than one things because the rubber has a tendency to tear, which you don't want.

Then you press the aluminum trim into the seam of the gasket -- you'll need to hook the little 'barb' of the trim so it doesn't pop out. Yes, I think you're right, the trim/insert hooks only on one side -- the outside -- of the seal. That's all it needs, because that's where the needed pressure is. This part of the job isn't too difficult, but requires some pressing and finessing. Even if your car originally came with plastic trim, you'll be replacing with the aluminum black trim which is the only option available, I think. The aluminum will fit, and is better than the plastic.

Then you take the whole assembly -- window, gasket with trim, and install it on the car. You do that with the rope, with one person pressing down on the glass from the outside, and the other inside, gently pulling the rope around the perimeter, gently bringing the lower lip of the gasket over to the inside of the metal window frame.

From your picture the gasket looks right, but the trim strip looks odd. Maybe that's what your window guy was referring to.

yes, I think the material that looks embedded in the seal is not supposed to be there. I'll know more in a couple of hours. I'm going to visit the "expert".

Okay, now back from the "expert".
They have never seen a car that has the plastic cover on the trim.
He called his buddy at Porsche and Porsche has a trim part number for the 89 3.2L listed as "black with plastic" but it is NLA. That part was maybe only for 89 3.2 cars. So I'm going with new trim "black" which is probably for 87 or so cars.
