x-faktory 3.2

I've just gotten to the point with this 3.2 build where it is starting to look like an engine again.
I have found that the stock 3.2 with EFI/ITBs, headers and sport muffler really is a great combo. I've built quite a few engines in a much hotter state of tune, but this relatively straight-forward mild hot rod build makes for a really great, street rod 911 engine...dependable too.

........this will have RHD ITBs, crankfire, Coil-on-plug with Microsquirt doing the ignition and fuel control. A simple, effective combo.

here's a pic,,,,,a ways to go yet, but should be on the test stand in a week or two.

stay tuned
regards,al

BEAUTIFUL!!!!
What type of power you expecting to make?
What would a rough build cost be?

freeform,
typically i would estimate a 15% increase in HP & TQ when going from CIS or motronic to ITBs, sport muffler etc....but the 3.2 seems to really come alive with these changes and some have reported serious gains to stock 3.2s, just by going this way.....your results may vary.

there is a link below to an earlier thread....towards the end there is a great example of a stock 3.2 with PMOs, SSIs and sport muffler making amazing numbers. (This was posted by stevesc_us...I installed the system...he took it to the dyno for tuning) Those are the best numbers I've ever seen, but it shows you how much the 3.2 resonds, once you replace the restrictive intake and exhaust....

Post your ITB Setup

Regarding the build costs.....I'm not sure what you're asking...the cost of the components or what this engine would sell for. PM me and we'll discuss.

regards,
al

Geneme,
This is basically a rebuilt, stock 3.2. with ITBs and modern fuel & ignition control...should be a great, streetable, mildly hot-rodded engine.

al

Hey Al,
Have you ever done a 4 cylinder Type 4 setup with these ITBs?
I have a great 2.2 liter motor that's just been redone.
Pulls like a train (not like a 6 cylinder 3.0 of course) but it's a lot lighter
than a 6 and gets out of its own way.
My big dellortos are long in the tooth and it's time for an update!

Adam,
I love the Type IV engine and had a really nice 2056 Fat motor in my 914....but carbed, not EFI. I have always wanted to install an EFI system on these and I have a crusty Type IV on the shelf......waiting in the queue.
I have a 69 912 that I am on the fence regarding a hot Type IV or a 6. The ITBs are available and putting a nice system together would be a great project.

I'd love to do one ....PM me and we can discuss.

regards,
al

more

a few more bits installed to the 3.2.....the Mega/Microsquirts require the use of high impedance coils.....so I needed to source late 90's/2000 VAG coils. They are a bit bigger on the coil end, due to the mounting flange...but they aggressively hold onto the spark plug. Also, i added a large grommet and a square o-ring to seal the coil to the valve cover...they are not going anywhere.

Dennis is making nice engine, injector and COPs harness for me.....as soon as i have those...and my crank pulley, I will be ready to fire this up......he said confidently.

regards,
al

Al,
I've never seen those coils used as a Cop conversion. Are they smart coils or do they need an external ignitor? Do you have a part number handy that you wouldn't mind sharing?

Great work with your 3.2 conversions. 3.2 owners seem the most conservative and can't seem to get through their heads that there are other modifications possible besides SSI's and Wong chips!

Thanks
Peter

Peter,
thanks for the comments.....I would not typically have used these coils ...in fact I had the later VAG coils chosen until i found out the M'squirt ECUs would only work with high impedance coils, found in year 2000 and earlier VW/audi cars.
Theses coils are smart coils and I've chosen the Bremi 06B 905 115 E

The M'squirt manual is very specific which part number and rev letter VAG coils can or cannot be used....see below:

it's alive

I have the 3.2 on the test stand....after toasting my COPs coils (long story), I rigged up an EDIS ignition to get the engine running, burned in, rings seated, tuned...all of the stuff.....and it is alive!!!!

As usual, running a little rich, but running strong.....with excellent leak-down results.....
Let the tuning begin.

Then , i'll get back to the COPs....I've ordered some more stuff, so i have a couple of COPs configurations I want to try out.....but in the meantime......I've got a good, running 3.2

Stay tuned
al

MicroCOPs

ok.....I have installed a new set of smart COPs and I am firing them from the Microsquirt logic level outputs in wasted spark mode.....now that I have the ignition set correctly....not only dies it run well, but the coils stay nice and cool too!!!!

Still running rich, but running...I'll fine tune later.

Al, Have you ever tried using EDIS controller to run COPs? Supposedly this works but I have not tried it.

Jamie,
Not quite, but I did use the Microsquirt logic level outputs to trigger an EDIS-6 coil directly...I.E. not using the EDIS Controller. (scroll up to earlier video)

I also have used the Microsquirt logic level signals to trigger a Quadspark Ignitor to fire 2-wire dumb coils.......

regards,
al

The smart coils are a good thing, but I do like that the dumb coils are so much smaller...and you can "hide" the ignitor box for a stealthier look.

microcops a slight revisit

I've spent more time today, working on the 3.2 w/Microcops. To activate the additional coil drivers, available in the Microsquirt, you need to add a pull up resistor....However, I found that some docs said to install 1000 ohm resistors and some docs said 100 ohm resistors. I started out with 1000 ohm resistors and that value seemed to work....but I noticed that my AFRs at idle were unsteady and no massaging of the VE table seemed to help......eventually I checked all the injectors (all good) and then I checked all of the coils, using a timing light.....cylinders 2 & 5 were firing intermittently......hmmm, this is the circuit with the 1000 ohm resistor. Long story short....I changed to a 125 ohm resistor (as close to 100 ohms as I had in my stash) and....all is good. Coils 2&5 are firing, Idle smoothed out, revs cleaner....AFRs are stable...more tuning required, but good progress.

regards,
al
