RGruppe??? Forgive the ignorance....
I'm looking to get filled in on the RGruppe. Sorry for my ignorance....from what I understand, it's an owners group for early 911s, seeminly centered on the West Coast.
Can anyone shed some more light??? What are the philosophies?? Who can belong?? I have a '73E, mostly stock, but for some "de-trimming" of the extraneous trim, and the engine is a 2.7 in mostly RS tune. Am I too far from stock?? What are the benefits? Thanks for any enlightenment!

I don't know about any benefits. I met a guy at the auto-x that was from the Chicago area. He was an RGruppe member. I asked if the RGruppe was some kinda secret society. He said " Yes...it's a secret society...but not diabolical"

It's actually getting harder to join, since there was concern that the group was getting too big. The two guys who founded it are trying to have membership reserved for people who will actively participate in the group's events. As a result, I think it will be harder to be allowed in if you're not on the west coast (or willing to visit the west coast, preferably in your 911).
I think there's some other level of membership they're thinking of for people who live further away, or just want to get the newsletter.

I think they need to form some new chapters. Not everyone with a hotrod longhood lives in Cali.

Actually, not many people know this but the Rgruppe is in fact an offshoot of the Trilateral Commision.

attitude is what it is all about.
although, like any secret society not everyone can be a member. if you are selected and make it through the initiation period maybe you can get a membership number.

I first read about RGRUPPE in Autoweek two years ago and diligently tracked down one of the founders Cris H. via email. Cris graciously sent me a membership application at the time. Living in Denver area put a crimp on my participation but I knew these people were kindred spirits. Filed the application away (ie. never sent in my app).
However, this year I decided I JUST had to go and check these characters and their cars out. No pre-registration, called a local early 911 bud to fill my co-pilot seat (Fritz--pelican username), no hesitation on his part to his credit. We had a great, 911 road trip out across the West. We covered the distance in one full day with the odometer going south. Rained all the time which made climate control a little tough and me wondering about new rust developments. But once there in Monterey, ALL THOSE COOL CARS! Further, we were also the lead car out(there were several groups), on a Laguna Seca parade lap with 30+ Pcar hotrods behind me, which was a memory of a lifetime. Awesome is an understatement. Left early afternoon on Saturday after the BBQ as we had to get home. However, our return trip was a little tortured, a front wheel bearing disintegrated, during a spring Sierra snowstorm, on the descent from Donner Pass. Dicey at the time but after two days in Reno, everything was fixed and I made it back fine (Fritz punched out early and flew home from Reno). A week later, Cris interviewed me over the phone and made me a member. Way cool. Considering making the trek again next year. Fritz should have his restored '73 911E with a 2.7 RS MFI engine sorted out by then such that we will do it in tandem. My RGRUPPE sticker and magnetic Rally emblem are now possesions of sincere pride. These guys rock!

Bill, it was cool to see you guys come all the way from CO. I've met Fritz before so I know he is a fanatic. You also proved your metal with that trip.
You guys had a glazed wide-eyed look on your faces after powering through that drive, and then landing in the middle of 911 nirvana! Hope you make it next year too.

As to it being a west-coast thing; I remember hearing something like; 'if California was its' own country, it would be the country with the most imported Porsches.' . . so it follows, anything porsche will be mostly in CA.
Then on attitude and rgruppe, there is this lengthy thread. |

Good point Ted.... It is indeed the cars which must posess all the attitude....
The right attitude of the car owners is a hearty smile, a warm greeting and great camaradrie. The cars on the otherhand have an attitude all their own some just a little nastier than others (but they like each other too!) ![]() Rgruppe as a club...? perhaps...but in alot of ways it is like a fraternity also. The friendships and commitment to "da boyz" will last a lifetime. As Jack mentions above, there is a kind of "slimming down" process in the works for RGruppe's membership...and our co-founders will have the final say-so in that dept. Achieving RGruppe membership......is probably easier said than actually done. There are no membership cards....but if you really are a member you have a member # that's assigned to you only, and you know what it is. More than anything RGruppe is a "mutual admiration society" for sports purpose early hot rod 911's and their owners. Sure there are some exceptions to this, and Herr Gruppmeister uses his powers of executive desicion on a car by car basis... Cheers!! All RGruppe-All the time ![]()
