Lock nut for ball joint lock pin

The lock nut for the ball joint lock pin is a steel lock nut.

However, the picture on Pelican appears to be a conventional nylon lock nut.

Did it change over the years? I can call Pelican and ask as well.

I wouldn't fret about it. Once the pin is wedged in it really isn't doing much.
The nylock will be fine.

My recollection of this nut is that it is all-steel and that it is shorter than the Nyloc nuts that hold the valve covers on. This is all from memory. But...I also think the Nyloc nut is also a steel nut, but with a plastic seal at the outer edge. the distal or lateral edge, if you will. So yeah, it probably doesn't make a big difference. Those wedge bolts are HARD to remove so I wouldn't expect one to fall out. Still, if I had a plain steel nut, I would use that instead.

I agree, removing the wedge bolt requires some commitment with a good hammer.

This. ^^^ The hammer strategy only shortens and widens the threaded stem.

Agreed. And a large, strong C-clamp with a receiving socket to press the pin out of the strut. Last thing we want to do is mush or bend the threaded end, making it even harder to move the pin out the hole

When I knock the pin out with a brass hammer it usually goes flying someplace in my garage to be found later....

Thread a sacrificial nut onto the lock pin before you wail on it. Not only does it help prevent damage but it also keeps it from leaving the strut like a projectile.
