Cool Griffith A/C not working

Hi guys I am a noob when it comes to the old school 911 air cooled Porsche’s, just got my 1978 SC Targa delivered after a 18month resto and the A/C is not blowing cold air. The compressor works the air comes out of the vents but it seems to be hot. Being that I live in AZ and it’s hot as the surface of the sun I would greatly appreciate it if some one could help. Fuse is intact (second from the right and it’s a blue fuse) the compressor seems to be working fine (at least I think it does since it turns with the belt that runs off the engine fan). According to the shop that did all the work they said it was blowing ice cold air when they sent the car over about a week ago. Yes the AC knobs are turned all the way to the right. Thank you for the help and your time.

When you say the compressor is turning you should be referring to the center part that's connected to the compressor shaft. If that is turning then next would be to verify pressures with a gauge set. Possible a connection was not tightened securely.

I just completed a complete Griffith overhaul on my 88 a month ago. I fought a leak that was my fault until I traced it to the source and fixed it. I have the addition of the two rear fender condensers and the system blows 38 degree ice cubes now. I would check in this order;

1. Compressor-as Walt says above start the car, turn the knobs to the max and then visually check the compressor. The key is that the very center of the compressor pully is turning when the system is turned on full.

2. Fans - turn on the ignition-motor not running and your AC fan knob. Go to the front frunk and check whether your front condensor and evaporator fans are running.

3. Freon level - if you have a leak the system could have been blowing cold at the shop and is warm now. If the level is very low it can cause your low pressure switch to not turn on the compressor pully. Putting a set of gauges on the system will tell you a lot.

Have you called the shop and asked them? How many days from when they say it blew cold to when you first used it?

Good luck. Lot's of AC system info on YT.

GriffithS A/C not working

Yeah, I got 2 wonder the same thing.

"Have you called the shop and asked them?"

And, if you called "Griffiths", what did they ask you?

Almost definitely a loss of freon, opening a pressure safety switch. Have someone locate and correct the leak and recharge. KB

Si Compressor turns like Walt states the middle part turns with that belt attached to the engine fan, the only condenser that I have on it is the one on the rear deck lid, the lines are new. The said that the car was tested for two days before shipping it over to me which as of today it’s been 1 week. I will go ahead and turn the AC knob and check the frunk to see if it’s running. If I needed to go to a shop apart from Patrick Motorsports in Phoenix are there any other recommendations?

1) check your email

2) when they are discussing what should be turning on a compressor to know its in the "on" phase or pumping:
A) The AC belt from your crank shaft pulley, that's the outer belt toward the rear bumper, drives the compressor pulley.
The belt is on the "pulley".
B) There is a 'hub' outside of the pulley, its closest to the rear bumper.
When there is power to the compressor clutch that outer hub should be turning in unison with the pulley; they both are spinning
together. When there is no power to the compressor clutch that outer hub will be standing still while the pulley with the belt driving it
is spinning around. Be careful with fingers and things like lose neck ties around spinning things.

If your engine is running, the ac is on (evap blower fan speed switch knob in the RH side of center console) is turned clockwise (go fully for the moment),
and the AC thermostat (switch knob on the LH side) is fully clockwise, and that outer hub is not spinning, then its most likely a power issue.

In addition to PMS, I've had good results at Stuttgart Southwest in Tempe, and Exotic Motorwerks in Scottsdale.
