Question Anyone know the standard spacing for cones..

in a Road and Track or Car and Driver slalom test? I would like to incorporate some of the "standard" road test features in next weekends IRPCA autocross. I can't seem to find any data on spacing for slaloms and quick lane change features.

Can someone direct me to an online source for this info?

Thanks,

you might try contacting on of the guys from www.rmsolo.org. I would think that they could help you out.

Try 15 paces between cones for your slalom and about 7 paces between gates.

Thanks Randy,

My first guess was 50 ft, and that would be about 15 paces.

Road & Track uses a 700 ft slalom with 8 cones for 100 ft spacing. I've found most autocross slaloms to be about 16 to 20 paces for spacing of 50 to 60 ft.

15 Paces!!!!!!

We use 25-30 and still see cars spinning out. That close and you are crawling!

Need some ideas? Try these.

Maybe they are spinning out because they are traveling too fast - try a shorter spacing and see what happens. Of course cones never caused a car to spin, the driver does that. Most national level autocrosses are between 14 and 20 paces in the slaloms.

I'll forward this info to our Autocross chair.

Thanks.

Harry, send them to this website. It is probably the best one on autocross course design by Roger Johnson, a designer of SCCA Solo 2 Nationals courses. His favorite autocross spacing is about 65 feet for straight line slaloms.

Harry:
The last SCCA Ax you ran has 22 paces twixt the cones and it wasn't straight. It was a "slow ya down" slalom.

We usually make em 30 at the ORPCA jobbies.

14? yuck.

Hey, Randy, I hear some of our local OR guys came up to play at
The Bremerton PNWR. Hope you guys didn't whupp on em' too bad.

Thanks for that link Randy. That is a great resource for any autox chair! I will forward it to the next autocross chair here in our region.

I was tossed into the job last year, and have had very few complaints to date. I have to deal with small lots most the time, so I have to come up with some weird stuff. I have a fair sized lot for this coming weekend and wanted to do something with a "car magazine test" feel to it. A nice skid pad type thing, lane change area, and a good slalom. That link helped give me some great ideas.

Thanks again,
