Adding Front Oil Cooler to 79 SC
I'm looking to add a front right fender cooler to my SC that has the standard trombone cooler.
Having never done this before, I'm trying to establish which brackets I need to buy to do this. I've got some pics of how my inner fender currently looks... and the part numbers I think I might need.... would appreciate any insight. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

here's a tech article written by our hosts - https://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_carrera_oil_cooler/911_carrera_oil_cooler.htm
also found this interesting/informative https://bit.ly/3xQ8kby more results worth checking out via a google search for "trombone cooler upgrade" Last edited by darrin; 06-24-2022 at 07:09 AM.. |

I swapped mine for a 28-tube brass cooler. It works very well, but I always recommend the Carrera with a fan. Also, reach above your rightside headlamp bucket for the upper mount - you may be pleasantly surprised to find it already in place.
For mounting, have a look at this thread: US 83 SC Trombone to 28 Tube Cooler Mounting. Beyond that, perform your searches outside of this forum by including search words and Pelican Parts Forum - you get many more hits that way.

The easiest route is to buy a kit; elephant racing Rebel racing, others sell them too. Everything you need in one box.

The cooler I'm using is available locally and is actually a little thicker than the ones from Elephant and CSF.. but looking at the Elephant site, looks like I can see I def need the bottom mount and maybe the top... and a few rubber bungs.

I just completed installing a CSF cooler on my 83 SC. I also added a 6 inch fan to the cooler.
It all worked out very well. You may want to start by spraying the fittings to the cooler with a penetrating oil and tapping on them to hopefully break them loose. I did the same for a week and did not have an issue at all , including replacing the rear oil lines. Everything came apart great. I did use the upgraded fender bracket and horn bracket. Also used a Rivcert for the lower hole on the lower mounting bracket. If you install a fan you can use the hole currently used to secure your trambone cooler to run the wires to the front trunk, I wrapped those wires with a rubber sleeve at that location. If you need the upper mount bracket, let me know I have a new one and also have two new of the insulating rubber mounts. The CSF cooler is a great cooler by the way. You may want to use straps to secure the two small hoses that connect to the cooler in a curved position to make it easier to install when the time comes. It helped me quite a bit. Al Z |

Adding to this thread rather than starting a new one. I just swapped my trusty 78 SC trombone for a later oil cooler.
To make room for the cooler I flipped the horns mounting strips over and to the front. ![]() ![]() I didn’t have the factory mount piece so just made a L shaped brace. ![]() It feels solid, I’ll probably run another small brace from the horn bracket. ![]() Still have to seal the outer edges with something. Plenty of tire clearance. I’ll probably add a fan later.

Just a note to make sure your horn is in good working order before you get the cooler in place.
