Top speed? I have an answer!

This is not a street racing post as there was not another car anywhere near...but if you are offended by high speeds on public roads then please stop and return to the main forum.

This run for top speed did take place on a public road, and I did not break the speed limit as this was on a stretch of unrestricted autobahn...but the law could do something I am sure if they felt the need.

I have been watching this stretch of road for quite sometime and paying close attention to the amount of traffic present on weekday, weekends, holidays, etc. I figured out that the best day and time for this would in fact be on a holiday (today is a German holiday) and in the early evening just before sunset as there is very little traffic and it's usually spaced out at great distances.

With the conditions right and the car ready to go I push the throttle down and watch the revs go up, and up! I was quite aware that the limit to my top speed with my current gearbox and 3.6 would be the gearing...so as the tach pushed past 6000 rpm I took a quick glance at the speedo.

150+ mph! My first response was "HOLY CRAP" and then I slowly backed off the throttle and let the car slow to my normal autobahn speed of 100 mph...but what a thrill ride it was and now I know the car will go way faster then I will ever truly need to go! My guess based on the distance the needle was past 150 the speed was in the vicinity of 160 mph.

So now I can check another item off my to do list and set goals toward something a little more meaningful...faster autox laps!

I did that in a '96 C4 in Germany a few years ago. Also checked it off my list of things to do with my life.

Now you need a Euro gearbox, or a taller 5th gear.

I remember having a great time driving my 16V Golf GTi on the autobahn. But whenever I was near top speed (125mph in my case) I would alway think of how expensive each kilometer was with gas being so expensive.

Neil...that's what I didn't do! I should have watched the fuel guage go down at the same time. Ha Ha...lucky for me I pay no more than the average price of fuel in the U.S.

A high speed blast once in a while is a good adrenaline rush. I'd say it's worth the increased fuel bill.

K9

How about fitting Carrera 3,2 front and rear spoiler on your car? You have the opportunity to go fast legally.

Mikkel...a new front and rear setup is on my list, along with flares and ducktail. After the transplant...my $$$ need to build back up.

When you slow back down to 100, it actually feels kinda slow doesn't it?

I have had my stock '88 up to an indicated 160, but I know by gearing and math that I was really going about 150. That's redline in 5th.

Why do you feel that you have to apologize for driving at highspeed on the autobahn where it is perfectly legal?

I have the answers to the same questions with my cars, on the autobahn when I picked them up in Germany. No apologies necessary.

K9,

Given enough room, you should see redline in 5th at a speed around 160-168 mph, depending on gearing.

a good place to take a legal high speed run in the states is Montana. I wouldn't try doing any top speed tests on the interstate, but state highways are unrestricted (basic speed law applies) ,long, straight and lonely once you get east of the rockies.

We have pushed this one to 272 Km/h (169 mph) on the german autobahn (timed on 2 Kms) a few times the same day. There was some rpm left, but we had to back off. I'm like the others here, high speed (like, stupid high) is for the track now.

I've hit redline in 4th...that was good for 120 (got there pretty quick too)...haven't yet found the right road and/or gathered enough of the big brass ones to make that final push into 5th....

fastest i've driven my 911 so far was maybe 2.5mph, but with my friends pushing it i think it'll do a good 6mph. I'll get into the double digits someday

Steering wheel is off center, otherwise it's genuine...around 180 mph:

I was doing 160+ with some crotch rockets the other night coming home from work. I was doing around 70mph when I noticed some bikers zooming by me at top speed. The road was clear so I bit, dropped the clutch to third, watched the rpm rise and then next thing I knew I was right next to the bikers. My 964 C4 felt solid at top speed as she was itching for more. Once at around 150+ some of the bikes had fell back, but there was one that kept trying to sprint away from the 964 but he found out that he couldn't. We exited at the same exit and he kicked both his leg out(acknowledgement?) while he was in front. I waved and called it a night. What a blast, but felt soooo wreckless after that though. I dont think I had ever push my car that hard before, what an incredible car the 964 is at top speed. And this is in the USA, not on the autobahn. I know....I know....I won't do it again.
