Sem Color Coat for Headliner
I'm looking to redo my glue-stained headliner and I'd like to know the closest match for the original off-white that SEM sells.
Sailcloth? White?

I think I can be of some help. My 76 coupe’s headliner was dingy and stained, but otherwise, looked pretty good. I thought it was a worthy $80 gamble to see if I could save it.
I’ll send pics later tonite, but VERY happy with my results. Mystic White. Other local air cool peeps were impressed as well. https://www.semproducts.com/product/vinyl-coattm/M25093 |

Here are a few pics from Sept '22. After one attempt at cleaning the headliner with a sponge and spray vinegar household cleaner on the prior weekend, I masked off everything possible and laid down any beach towel, plastic drop cloth, old car cover, whatever I could find to build my "cave". Over the course of one evening and the following morning, I probably sprayed about 6 coats of Mystic White SEM vinyl paint or dye. That was followed immediately (within 5 min) of spray paint with SEM Tac Free as that's prescribed to prevent that tacky/ sticky feel. What is interesting is that when the headliner was spray painted, it would immediately develop wrinkles or rolls. I thought my goose was cooked from the get-go. But the following morning, the headliner was pulled tight again. I put on the last 3 or so coats that morning - the headliner "rolls" came back, but they too went away by the next day when the job was complete. I ended up having a little bit of overspray here and there, but it cleaned up easily afterwards. And this stuff was the WORST paint I've ever had to breathe in. My little KN95 mask was no match for this stuff. After a light coating of the full headliner, I would run to the great outdoors to breathe in the fresh air! Get a better mask if you attempt this job.

wow looks great. I thought the perferations might get clogged up and covered over but they look fine. I painted my jeep seat with sem paint back in 2008 and its holding up great. I put all sorts of car parts and scrap metal junk on it no problem its tough stuff

Can't seem to find Mystic White anywhere.. I found Super white on Amazon which I've ordered which still looks "off white" so guessing it will be fine. Looks great.

Head Liner Restoration…….
ToySnake,
How many paint cans did you use to finish the project? You applied multiple coatings and that would need more paint. I am glad I saw your posting because I was tempted to rip the head liner because they look yellowish and faded. And your restoration turned out great. And a good inspiration. Thanks. Tony |

Reviving and old thread here but I just finished this job myself, I went with Ranger off white (m25073), shows very white in pics because I’m using an LED floodlight.
1 can vinyl prep, 3 cans off white, 1 can tac free was just right. Breathing in tac free is rough, vinyl prep stripper is not paint safe, careful applying that. I also repaired some serious rips near the zipper ends, one was able to be stitched and glued, the other I used sail repair tape which I think came out nicer. used 3/m yellow adhesive to tighten and re glue a few spots. Like any paint job the taping off took the longest ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
