paint stripping alternator fan
What's the best way to strip paint off a mag alternator fan?

Soft media blasting or chemical like Strypeze.

Kleen strip "stripper" comes in a spray can from Home Depot.. I would test a small area first...Not sure what it does to the Mag but that stuff works wonders on everything else

I wouldn't use any chemicals on the mag, just media blast, not too aggressive.

The metal is as soft as s, really soft I mean.

was it just painted or powdercoated ?
powder coating is tough. update us on your progress.

I had no problems using aircarft stripper on a powder coated mag fan. First coat got off majority, second coat most of the rest. Then a clean up with glass bead in the cabinet.

If paint, Tal-Strip is good. Never brush it on. Pour it on, and it will only take one coat.
Lesson I learned stripping cars at my dads resto shop. If powdercoat, media blasting will be required unless there's something out there that takes off powdercoat chemically.

I painted the fan a few months back using VHT primer that was suppose to adhere to magnesium. Then PPG primer & paint to match the car color. I have about an hour run time on the motor.
I'll strip it with the Citristrip mentioned above and see how it looks.

Once cleaned and painted they look great but never seem to stay that way for long.
The air intake brings in all sorts of particulate at speed, blasting your nice work. My SC fan supports pollishing, so that is what I do and otherwise do not attempt to cover it (clear or paint).

I had my fan and housing cleaned and cerakoted by Shawn at Trusix - and it's beautiful. I'm hoping the cerakote will last longer than other coatings

Cerakote will last the longest and give you the thinnest most durable finish.
