More R taillight questions.....

The fiberglass assemblies showed up with the lenses....but no bulbs....bummer, maybe Manny, Moe and Jack will have some, unless some has an idea. They look to take the double ended bulbs like interior lights....the instructions are in German and Ingo is in Japan still.....

My question is.......

The sequence of lights.....

Starting on the outside top, turn signal yellow, bottom running light.....the single red light towards the middle is the brake light....Right????

You're right about the sequence. Although the running light could be in either position, since both are visible from the side (because of the way the inside one is placed farther back than the outside one).

I went with half-clear on the outside so I'd still have reverse lights. Then I have turn signals above that. I moved a two-light set into the inner red one, so I could have running lights there as well as brake lights.

Thanks Jack.....two multi point questions....8^)

1) Did you get the bulbs seperately? Or did they come with the "kit"?

2) How did you rig the back up light....it looks as if there is only hook ups for three, SINGLE element bulbs. Brake, running and turn....did the original R cars not have back up lights?

Typ 911R tail lights

Mike,
The following info is from the Type 911R Driver's Manual (aug. 67). The outside lights (amber, 1 bulb) are the rear turn signal lights. and the inside lights, (red/amber, 2 bulbs) are the tail, (amber half) and stop, (red half) lights. I have posted two photos of R's the first one is the BP Car #1 and the second one is #11, they show the location of the lights. and the bulbs are standard. hope this helps, Ernie Wilberg R-Gruppe #8...

Mike, the bulbs came with the Hella assemblies, in my case, or at least the guy who got them for me purchased the bulbs at the same time. I think they're the same as the interior cockpit dome light bulbs. I got three pairs of the light assemblies (including an amber/red pair that I didn't use, so that I could swap the two-bulb innards of the amber/red lights into the solid red pair).

I didn't wire them on my car, though. KevinP73 did (I'm pretty sure). If he reads this, maybe he'll sound in.

Thanks Jack,,,,again.

Ernie....what I have is a half amber/red and a SOLID red....not the solid amber that you have posted in your pic.

Plus it looks like the 1/2-1/2 lens set up is swapped in position from Jack's ride.....

Argggghhhh, so much for authenticity on my backdated SC wannabe clone......

fer 300 bucks you think I coulda got some bulbs.....

I think I will mount them on the ducktail like a semi trailer.......

Oh yeah....Ernie.....did they have a provision for back up lights or did they do away with them for weight savings....?

How would those look on a middle-year car? Nasty? Not so nasty?

Just wondering...

Wiring was pretty straight forward. I salvaged the harness from a couple damaged light buckets I had in the shop. This way removing them for any reason wouldn't pose any difficulties, OEM plugs are still intact. Other than that nothing out of the usual.

Here's a picture of the two bulbs that are in my red running light (upper) brake light (lower) combination.

And here are the bulbs themselves.

Big bulb says:

C21W PHILIPS 12V21W 2BR

Little one says:

12866 PHILIPS 12V10W K25673

Huh? Did you say something?

Actially, DD74, I saw your car today at TRE. Looks great. Tyson says the thing is surprisingly fast. With the ducktail, I think the R lights would look just fine.

Of course, I'm of the opinion that the R lights are kind of ugly, but very purpose-looking.

I've come to like those lights a lot more than I thought I would on BB2, however I will say that after chasing that car down a dark road or two at speed that the tail lights are pretty worthless as actual lights. Kind of like the token ones on outlaw Harleys down by the rear axles, technically legal but only good for running from the law. Couldn't make out any brake lights, or maybe you never used the brakes(?).

Did not know which year you were refering too....

BTW, found some bulbs, went to Kragen. They are only 10w but may do the trick. Still need to figure the back up light issue. I may just hook up the rear fog light I have laying around.....

PS...thanks for the pics Jack.

Mikez, the bulbs you need with contacts on each end as shown in Jack's post above are known as Festoon bulbs. They are available in different wattages (commonly 5W/10W/18W/21W) & varying lengths (commonly 35mm/39mm &42mm).

There are/were a wide range of these Hella lamps available & they're not all the same. Lamps bases were available in metal or plastic construction & designed to accept single or twin bulbs.

The recommended wattage for each particular intended use is stamped or moulded into the inside of the lamp base (see pictures).

The double bulb assemblies for stop/tail or flasher/tail are stamped with recommended wattages of 18W/10W:

& the correct single bulb assemblies for the all-amber flashers have a recommended wattage of 18W:
