In Dash squealing

Took the Pcar out yesterday morning and while on the freeway she started to squeal under the dash intermittantly. I played with the heater controls and it didn't seem to change, the length and pitch of the squealing. It seems like the faster I run (70-80) the more it happens.

I've heard the squeal before and thought it was coming from near the shifter and it usually does it once or twice during a drive. Yesterday it did it for a good 15 minutes on and off and starts high pitched and goes to low for about 2-3 seconds. It kinda sounds like a high pitched party favor.

Anyone out there ever had this sort of problem? Thanks....

My '76 sometimes squeals when I use the wipers on a very cold day. It only does it for a few seconds. Could be dry bearings on your heater blower fan (which I think spins from natural airflow when the car is in motion) or something similar.

It's more than likely the blower motor inside the fresh air blower. YOU NEED TO FIX IT! I had the same problem in my SC, untill it started an electrical fire. Luckily I recogonized the smell imediatley, and killed the power to it. Some people have taken theirs apart and lubed them. I repplaced mine with a $50 used one from Parts Heaven.

Hi!
Had the same problem with my 83 SC. I heard the sound, and then i smelled smoke. I fortunately reacted quickly and cut the power.
I haven't fixed it yet, so I'm driving without a blower.
Would appreciate ANY tips on how to change it.

Thanks for the replies guys, the control is the top levers on the dash? Which is the off position so I don't fry my car?
I drove it for about 50 miles yesterday and didn't make the sound, but I also played with the top two knobs Tuesday. I'll start investigating Saturday.

Thanks!

Yep, this is it (at least in my euro '83 SC):

Just move it all the way to the left.

Tom, it's a pretty easy fix. Less than an hours work, you just have to pay attention to where everything hooks in and such. You access it by opening the front boot, pulling back the carpet, and removing the cardboard panel. There's a couple control cables you have to un-fasten, and a few hoses to disconnect, then one electrical plug to un-hook. You have to remove the screen under the windshield and above the front hood.

Sorry for the weak description, I'm doing it all of memory, since I'm at work.

One other thing, while I was in there, I re-routed one of the fresh air tubes, so that I get fresh air through the a/c center vents, since my a/c is long gone. It greatly improved the air flow in the car.

Matt,
Thanks for the info!
I'll remove it tomorrow.
