3.2 Carrera w/ headers 2-in muffler fitment help? SCART, Dansk, Monty.

My 1987 has M&K longtube headers, backdated oil lines, backdated muffler mount and an M&K 2 in / 1 out muffler.

Brian at M&K told me that the header outlets are in the same spot as the SSIs / early heat exchangers.

The M&K MKM27 muffler is too loud for the car's use case, so I intend to try SCART Riva, Dansk Sport and Monty 2 in / 1 out mufflers to see which sound quality and volume I prefer between the three.

Per the attached pics, I know that the original 1 in / 1 out 3.2 sausage shape muffler has a relief (approximately 12mm deep) to make room for the 3.2's larger engine console (carrier). As a result, a 3.2 muffler can be used on a 3.0, but not the other way around.

Given my recent SCART Riva mounting issues...
SCART Riva specific muffler bracket MIA. Did I figure out the problem?
...it looks like this may also be the case with 2 in / 1 out sausage shaped mufflers. Can anyone confirm this?

The pictures in the Dansk catalog show a similar relief, but I don't know if those are generic photos, or if the actual muffler is shown.

Who can confirm which 2 in / 1 out SCART, Dansk Sport or Monty muffler will fit a late 3.2 Carrera with M&K (or SSi) headers? Bonus points for part numbers.

My neighbors and I thank you.

Frank, I have this one in my garage I plan on installing with SSIs on my 87 Euro Coupe.

2 in 1 out Dansk Stainless Sport Muffler with stock sized tip so I can add a black OEM tip. Has a relief for the 3.2 carrier.

Dansk PN 92.512SSI 39/20

Few months from installing it all but I'll let you know how it sounds when I do.

The new matte (or, as they call it "mat") finish! Sexy. Me likey.

Thanks DG!

SCART appears to have an option for the stock tip too. Monty does not appear to offer that option. Could preclude the Monty from consideration.

Also, from what I gather, "Mike from Dansk" used to frequent Pelican (post 5 here)...
Dansk muffler for 911 SC with SSI heat exchangers
...that's no longer the case. Does anyone have a contact there that can provide technical info? This was illuminating...

"
Here's what I learned from discussions with Mike from Dansk when I went through this on my SC.

60mm will be closest to stock. It'll be louder than your stock SC because it's a two in with more direct exhaust flow to the muffler. The higher dB is not due to the muffler though.

70mm has "sport" baffling and is a free flow design. This is what I had on my SC and originaly on the track my SC was hardly audible with a helmet on at speed. With the 70mm muffler "sport" it was much more noticeable. However, I had a 2-out and I am sure that makes it a bit louder than a 1-out.

80mm is the same at the 70mm but has larger out pipes. I've been told that this version doesn't make any more power but is louder which is the driving force behind a lot of muffler upgrades."

I wanted to keep things looking factory which is why I went with the 60mm outlet and factory tip.

I had an 84mm single out Dansk on another Carrera years ago and it was too loud for my taste.

It is backed in the garage. Still too loud and too raspy on WOT acceleration and overrun for my tastes. I'm looking for a lower, more basso profundo, tone. Speaking of...

Well, the Riva should put you in that neighborhood. There is the Barry White that sounded pretty damn good too, but I think those are few and far between.

It does not make sense that Scart doesn't have a readymade bracket for your 3.2. That's what they do, make "newer" cars sound "older"... and clearly they have a bracket for their other sausage. Very strange.

It’s interesting about Dansk. The 356 Registry folks severely hate them. Quality and weld issues. There seems to be love for them from the 911 crowd though.

I had the below 84mm SS Dansk Sport 1 in / 1 out on two of my 3.2s for a while. It made the right noises and also dynod well. The welds were nice enough. It was an older unit.

Don't get me wrong, I value artistic quality welds and all, but as long as the welds are functional, they don't have to be THAT pretty for me.

Frank,
This is the muffler you want to use. Same deep throaty sound as a stock Carrera but a bit louder.

Thanks Sal.

While my inner 17 year old likes the idea of more tips, this car will remain a single tip-er. My '89 is slated to get a GT3 box.

Phew!

Per DG's post, Dansk 92.512SSI is ordered and I just received tracking info. It's en route to me from Anaheim and is slated to arrive this afternoon. W00T! I know what I'm installing this evening.

I’m super jealous - post some videos. I won’t be installing mine for a few more months.

Thumbs up

Ordered at 6:40a yesterday.
Delivered at 11:19a this morning. Not too shabby!

It weighs 1.25 lbs more than the original 1 in / 1 out muffler and 8.8 pounds more than the MKM27 muffler, but when it comes to lower / deeper tone, I think you need a muffler with more volume / mass. We're about to see as I'm prepping the install right now.

Please note the imported polishing cloth. Made in Denmark! :-)

I'll report back post install (assuming it mounts up without issue).

Frank, I think this muffler should work well for you and with a decent sound.

While you are installing could you possibly estimate the length of the runners from the head to the collector? Use a string to get an estimate, then measure the string. I'd like to know how long the runners are.

Thanks.
