				reinstalling seats in '72 911

Hi - I'm reinstalling the original seats in my '72 (PO had put in recaro sport in the 90s). Had the originals recovered, but when they go in, the seat track adjuster (lever inside front) won't clear the slots when the rail is installed straight. I'm putting the rail directly on the bracket on the inside to bolt down. The seat won't slide when the rail is straight! Am I missing something? The seats were uninstalled when I got them, so I'm not sure that I'm installing them correctly. thanks | ||

				 | The photos show the lever lifted (pin in stop up close to seat bottom), and lever let loose (pins rotate down, stop fully inserts in slot). If I didn't know better, I'd think these might be for a different seat set-up? PO told me these were the original '72 seats. Sorry - noob here - trying to figure out photos! Photos please. Also, early seats have an 18" seat rail spacing vs the 16" spacing for the 1974+ seats.

				 | Sorry - let's try this again. Two photos - one with the lever lifted, one with it down. The catch never clears the track | ||

Those are the correct type seats for a 1973-earlier. The rails bolt to the bottoms of the seats first, then lower the seat onto the brackets, then lift the seat adjuster lever, then wiggle the seat so that the "teeth" can engage in the slots on the bracket and drop in place. Then bolt the seat rails to the front and back of the brackets. Are they comfort or sport seats? Post pics. Something else to consider if you rebuild or recover your seats: Swap the passenger and driver seat bottoms. The driver's side almost always has more wear and tear and compression. The seat backs and hinges will swap over so that the recline and flip-forward levers stay on the outside of the seats. If you swap the bottoms, you will get the fore/aft adjustment lever on the outside of the seat instead of the inside. I like this, because I don't have to lean awkwardly across the seat and past the steering wheel to reach the adjustment lever to awkwardly move the seat back before I get in the car (in case my wife or someone else has been driving it and moved the seat forward).

I could be wrong but it looks like the two roll pins that I presume hold the toothed bracket onto the actuating arm are protruding too far and stopping full rotation away from the rack if that makes sense. Maybe try trimming them down so that they are flush with the surface.

IIRC, they just stick out like that. They don't rotate far enough to hit the seat pan.

A quick visit to the Early 911S Registry BBS reveals the following. There may be more. Search terms are "comfort seats" and "seat rebuilding". Post #17 of this thread may be helpful: https://www.early911sregistry.org/forums/showthread.php?84129-Seat-restoration-question Post #1 here: https://www.early911sregistry.org/forums/showthread.php?167764-1973-leather-comfort-seats Post #1 here: https://www.early911sregistry.org/forums/showthread.php?163092-Recaro-Comfort-Seats-72-73-Double-Locker-Unrestored
