Best way to raise rear of car with engine out?

Hi everyone,

I currently have my car up on jackstands and have the engine out. The rear of the car is currently raised high enough to pull the engine out, but I've added a turbo and an intercooler, and now it isn't high enough. I can pull the intercooler off and get the engine in, but it would be nice if I could install the motor "complete."

So... does anyone know of an easy way to raise the rear of the car a few extra inches? Lowering the front won't work as that is the way I took the motor out.

Anyone have any ideas?

Did you remove the rear bumper? Put some lumber under the jack stands.

for my 930 I remove the rear bumper and the IC.
I also remove the front wheels and drop the front of the car down as far as it will go to roll the engine out. I even have the engine on a very hi tranny jack to roll it out.

if you really need to jack the car I have put a 2x4 across the rear of the floor pan to spread the weight out to jack it up. there may be some little rubber plugs that can get pushed in. remove rear wheels.

you really want the IC off when putting it back in....and taking it out.

Yeah, rear bumper is off, all the tires are off, etc. I'm using the harbor freight lift table, so I have to get the car pretty high.

I'll probably just pull the intercooler off before I reinstall the motor.

Front of the car has been dropped to the ground, front tires are off.

Smart-ass answer. However, once you get one, you'll wonder why you didn't do it years ago!

Bastard!

I've wanted to buy one of those lifts for years. I don't know why I just don't do it.

Remove the front transmission mount from the transmission. Install it in its normal place near the rear torsion bar tube. Use the mount as a jackpad and raise the rear. Adjust the jackstands, which I presume are under the torsion bars.

I agree with Jack Stands. I picked one up a couple years ago and never looked back, If you work on your own car it will save your back . Love it

I put a piece of hard wood (2 or 3 feet long) across the "D" area in this picture to jack on to get my motor out from under the car. Same to slide it back under.

This ^^ or by the front trans mount.
The car is probably light enough so you can lift the rear by hand...

Great advice!

I never thought to use the transmission mount. That will be quick and easy.

I use the stock jack support holes (side of body) but I have one of those fittings that you can then put a jack under. Not sure what that is called but you can buy them on Pelecan.

After I jack the side of the car up, I place Jackstands under the rear torsion bars (under the fender). If you want to jack the car fairly high, I would do this in increments (i.e., aome on each side, then a little more).

never thought of the trans mount either.
may not be a big enough space though and the jack could slip off, just be careful with the front on stands, make sure the jack rolls as the car goes up

get yourself a long and strong enough log of wood 2x4-style, find a fit enough box to lay the jack on it and lift the car with the woodlog placed across the engine bay.
I hope you get ma idea.

Good points. Space is not usually an issue but the jack rolling is a concern. Remember, tho', that a little lift (a little horizontal roll) at the trans mount raises the car's rear quite a bit. And everything happens at a height-above-floor that is much less than options at the rear of the car.

Put the front tires back on and use an engine hoist to lift the back of the car by the rear engine mount bar attachments.
