What type of calipers have I got?

Hi,

I’ve got a ’76 Carerra 3 and I’m just about to order new brake pads, but I’m a bit confused as to which type of front caliper I’ve got.

From what I’ve read Porsche changed from front S calipers to A calipers about the time my car was built.

I've attached a pic.

Regards,
Andrew.

Looks like a caliper. . . I mean "A-Caliper"

The "S" has no thru-bolts.

The A's and M's look alike. Measure the mounting bolt spacing to be sure. Or take the pad out and measure the pad.

Run a search on M calipers or A calipers.

Also remember that there are different types of "A" and "M"calipers. There are wide versions of these calipers.

Bill Verburg has done us all a big favor by making this great brake identification page:

Bill V's Brake Page

Here's the pertinent info. from Bill's page regarding the "A" and "M" calipers:

Gee, this is a little more complicated than I thought. Wayne’s book makes it sound so straight forward ;-)

Bills brake page is great.

Looks like the front are A calipers… think I’ve got Ms on the back… guess I should check… time to try out my new trolley jack :-)

the only trick I know is on my car a magnet will hold to the rear "M" caliper and will not hold to the front "S" caliper. So what metal is the "A" caliper made of?

From what I've read the S caliper is aluminium and the A caliper is cast iron.
