Help Jaime find a 911

Hi all,

Well the long time girlfriend has decided it's time to buy a car. She's been driving around in the same old car since high school and now she's ready for a real ride.

She's not interested in dramatic depreciation of a new car. More importantly, she's not afraid of buying a used car. For better or worse, dating me for the last few years has exposed her to many different sports cars.

Her two favorites in the under 30k range are the late model BMW M Coupe (the Z3 based coupe with the M3 motor) and a 92-94 964 C4 cab, targa, coupe in that order.

So, if anyone spies a clean black on black or silver on black version of either please let me know. Of course we prefer an original private owner with records but this search is far and wide. We prefer a car within a reasonable distance from Pittsburgh, but of course, we'll come to the right car regardless of where it is located in the lower 48 states.

Her purchasing plan was to wait until the fall when the sports car prices (according to the old wives' tale) drop a bit. But, unfortunately, she smashed up her old car yesterday. She was unhurt in the accident but now the full court press for her dream car is on.

Just lask week, we looked at a gorgeous black C4 wide-body the other day but that's probably out of the price range. But, geez, that's a nice looking car. I'm not *usually* a big fan of the 964's but the black on black wide body C4 with sport seats was really nice.

If you want to make an argument for one choice or the other, fire away. She'll be reading along. To her credit, she's really thought long and hard about this so don't bother suggesting any other models. I've tried the 3.2 Carrera route, 968 Cabriolet, etc... No go. It's going to be one or the other of the above cars and might boil down to the nicest one she sees regardless of which model it is (although I'd argue for the P-car of course).

Thanks all!

David

P.S. there's a photo of Jaime in the recent Watkins Glen R Gruppe meet thread. She went along for the weekend and enjoyed all the early Porsche racecars with the rest of us.

Dave, I admire your LTGF taste in automobiles. It takes a special mind set to admit liking the looks of the M Coupe, I always liked it and you see so few of them, it would make an exceptionally fast grocery getter. I'm just out in Chester Co. I'll keep my eyes open here for any thing.

Tim, wouldn't that be close to where the earth is on fire? Can't remember the name of the town, but you know the one that's a ghost town.....Centralia, see my mind isn't totally gone.

And yea, Dave I know we're supposed to be finding 964's, but there are damn few listed down here, I really am on your side!

Are you kidding? Get the 964! The 92-94's are all sorted out and represent almost 40 years of Porsche experience with air cooled motors. The 3.6 has plenty of HP and torque and do not leak. The flywheel and distributor issues have been addressed and the exterior has been updated with cup wheels and aero mirrors. The cabs are nice even though the back window is plastic, the targas are different and really is a personal preference and the coupes (and cabs) can be had with the wide body.

The BMW has always had controversial styling and is a matter of personal preference. But in the end, the Porsche is a true sports car, the BMW looks like one (to some).

The M roadster will be much easier to maintain than the 964 C2 cab. All you have to do is change the oil. Change other fluids once or every 2 years. That's it. In addition, the M roaster is a much more modern car than the 964. The 964, you have to do valve adjustments. As for reliability, the M-roadster S52 engine is pretty bullet proof.

The M-roadster is a much more comfortable and easier to drive. More comfortable seats, better driving position. Lighter steering, clutches, gas, brakes, etc. The shifter is light years from the 964. Suspension is more geared toward a daily driver. Lighting is much better than the 964. Drive both and see what she likes.

axl, Boxters are chick cars, I've driven them and they are very nice, but nice is not an attribute I look for in a sports car.

Dave/Jamie, I sorta gotta go with the adman, A wide body C4 Triple black is an excellent find, the market is soft now and you might be able to chisel'em down on the dollars.

some people (well, nostatic anyway) think the M-Coupe looks like a clown shoe, but it's always been one of my favorites.

No back seat thre, but how much can you fit in that little hatch? Will it hold a bike with the front wheel off or is there no way?

She won't even discuss a Boxster. I suggested it over my own convictions for all the reasons they sell so well; more modern, probably more reliable, easier to drive, etc. No dice. The girl doesn't like them at all.

My personal choice is the C4 wide body, black on black. I think that's her favorite too.

The maintenance issues are a consideration. She plans on keeping the car for years and over time, I sorta figured they'd be about the same and if they tipped in favor of the BMW I figured my Porsche background (if any) would help balance the scales. Valve adjustments aren't a big deal after all.

I also think the C4 is somehow more car for the dollar spent. The S52-engined M Coupes do have a decent reputation but I assume they'll continue to depreicate quickly over the next few more years. The S54's seem to be a different story. The prices are higher yet we've all heard about the problems these engines have in the M3's. They seem to be more rare also.

The 964's are also depreciating but probably at a slower rate by now. Conventional wisdom says that any 911, in the long run, will hold its value better over just about any other car that doesn't end in the letter "i".

I'll check out the links mentioed above. Thanks so much for the tips! I told Jaime that this board would find her a car faster than any amount of time searching the classified ads. I dropped my PCA membership awhile ago, would someone mind scanning the most recent Pano?

Thanks guys!

David

This super reliable car is a polar silver
metallic, 5 speed, sunroof coupe, with 82,xxx
miles. I have performed all regular
maintenance, am the second owner
(non-smoking), and have all receipts/records
since 1998 and 20,000 miles.

It has the rare leather sport seats and a
factory limited slip. The car features a
professionally installed and elegant high-end
stereo including MB Quart speakers (factory
mounting locations), Alpine head unit and CD
changer, subwoofer (behind driver's seat,
almost invisible), and twin amps.

Recent valve adjustment, new Optima battery,
tires/brakes/pads <3000 miles old.

The exterior is a 8 of 10 (minor stone chips
proportional with its 82k miles). The interior
is a 9.9 of 10 (it simply can't be in better
shape for a ten year old car!!).

I must sell quickly, so if you're looking for a
964, call (973-301-3278)/email (cboyer@gtc-

Someone has been smoking some bad $hit or had too much to drink thinking a 91 Cab is going to get anywhere near $35K. At that price, you can get a 993 Cab and in a couple of months, a 996 Cab.
