40 years today with my SC

Hard to believe it’s been that long with my 1979 SC. But I picked it up on April 1st of 1984. The only issue with the car is the windows operate slowly.
But I’m a bit slower myself so I can forgive that. 217k miles on it and I’ve changed the clutch once; no engine work. Joined Pelican in 2001 and must say this board is what gave me the confidence to do much of my own maintenance. So much knowledge is here that I always felt there was help if needed.

Over the years I’ve picked up 2 more 911’s but I’ll always keep the first one.

Love the car......I wish I'd converted mine to the 3.0 SC engine but it's great for me for a spirited run on the weekends.

So great that you still have many more Porsche's in your "stall".

Nice.

I always did minor maintenance on my cars, but this forum showed me that a total suspension refresh with all new rubber bushings, shocks, torsion bars, ball joints, turbo tie rods, and steering rack rebuild was not that big of a deal.

The information here is amazing.

I have only had my 911 for 29 years and I am up to 193,000 miles.

Thanks guys. It’s been a fun ride. These early air cooled Porsches engage all the senses. Honestly, there are days I walk past my 993, past my tuned turbo that has over 500 hp, just to drive the SC with less than 200 hp. There’s something about the early cars. For one thing, I love the way the exhaust continues to crackle and pop 10 minutes after I shut it down.

If you look at internet comments, many people only talk about being unable to purchase a new GT3 RS. In my opinion most will never reach that car’s capability and there are so many more Porsche models they could enjoy for much less money. But since it’s only my opinion, I never comment.

My other 911s:

It's funny; if you spend a lot of time here, you get a sense that engine work is frequent and necessary on these motors but then you read posts like this or meet people "out in the wild" and they have decades of largely trouble-free motoring with these engines.

Congrats on the sustained ownership!

Great looking car ... When you got it was the bar already painted black ? Did the car originally come with brighworks and the Targa Bar was not painted ???

I ask as my Targa is very similar and i wonder how it came originally trimmed.

CBM with brightworks around the windows with Black Targa bar.

Nice color.

When I bought the car, the trim was anodized black but had started to fade. The targa bar was black but worn in several areas. Look at post #6 from Early_S_Man back in 2002. It has the factory spec for the targa bar paint. Instead of following the factory spec, I used Wurth Satin Black to repaint it. I put a thin layer of Vaseline on the targa script that allowed me to easily wipe the paint off.

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/63415-targa-bar-pics.html

If you look at the connection point on my trim, you can see it was once anodized black. Underneath it did not fade.

Great looking car and I always love to hear stories of long-term ownership.

At the risk of going off-tangent, can you tell us anything about the turquoise longhood with gas burners in the background?

It belongs to a member of our local Porsche club. I believe it’s a 1972. He is ex-military and bought it new. One owner.

ah ok now i understand, your car was black trim not brightworks originally. I did read somewhere that 78 was the last year for brightworks ( or maybe just a standard not sure ) so yours being 79 would be black trim. My quest continues to try and find out if my bar was originally painted or not. BTW mine is satin black also.

hope you get to enjoy for another 40 years

Iceman. I remember posting about this many years ago. I seem to recall that black trim with color matched headlight rings was an option for 78-79 model years. Option M496 comes to mind. Standard trim was silver with matching headlight rings. I think black trim was standard starting around 1980. I know it’s discussed in the Porsche Redbook.

I checked. My memory was faulty concerning the option code. M496 was the option code for black trim. It was made standard on the SC in 1980.
