How do I remove the retaining clip holding the break line?
It looks like to remove the calipers I have to disconnect the brake lines at the retaining clip. If this is the case I would need to bleed the brakes right? According to the 101 projects book it doesn't seem like this should be the case. It looks to me as if the retainer is welded to the shock and the soft line and the hard line are connected to each other through a hole at that point. What is the trick? Thanks

The way "I" do it....hit it with some lubricant and grab the top of it with needle nosed pliers or vise grips....yank up, DO not bang hand when it releases suddenly.

Some years are removeable some are not. Mine can't be done without opening the brakes.

I don't think mine can either. There is no slot underneath the clip. It swivels on the axis a little bit, but not enough to matter. I have a 79. So is the verdict that I have to bleed the breaks? Its not a problem. I just bought 2 cans of break fluid with my pads and bearings.
Is there any other little tricks I should know? I wish my computer was in the garage!

I can work on it when it isn't so beautiful outside...

You can become an honorary member by asserting that you should have bought an SC....and will do so, next time.....
That pic was from a spare I had lying around. It might not be off of a Porsche, but maybe the Chevy. But that what they should look like, or close.

Definitely not a VW/Mercedes/Porsche Ate clip ...
Those flat clips do come off easily, but the upper pic is not the 'quick release' variety! Line must be disassembled to get the 'U' type retainer loose from the bracket/tab ...

OK... so I have resolved that problem... Next issue in another post. I removed the caliper and the brake fluid has escaped...

just for the archives...
my 1970 911E has a fixed clip and to remove the caliper I had to disconnect the hard line from the rubber line at the strut before I could remove the front calipers -- Britt |

My 85 has the spilt clip....on some cars it's located so it pulls "out"..some "up"...I guess it depends how it's installed.
BTW...I found the same set up on my friend's 71 914....why would intervening years for 911's be different? ---Wil Ferch

My 79 is split in the back and solid in the front... I guess it was a gradual process of evolution...lol
