3.2 to varioram conversion

This topic has been kicked around, but from my searches here I can't seem to get clear whether this swap is readily doable or makes good sense.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2420446462&category=33615

Would this be a sensible upgrade for my '87?

Just kicking tires here...

I think you'd run into a couple of different problems with this swap.

1. The vario-ram intakes are designed for a larger engine with different power characteristics, so it may not actually help a motor that has very different needs

2. The DME for the 3.2 isn't setup for vario-ram and the dme for later cars isn't set up for the rest of the 3.2

On another train of thought, The 3.2 intake, I believe, is a common upgrade for 930's, if it is capable of working well for a higher horse motor, then it should be good for a 3.2.

Steve Weiner @ Rennsport Systems has posted either here or on the Rennlist about 3.2 intakes not having even flow between the runners and benefitting from extrude-honing the intake to even out the flow (or something to that extent).

I'm pretty sure Randy W has a 3.2 with Varioram in his number 51 car. You might want to send him an email or maybe he'll chime in shortly.

From the link it appears you are interested in upgrading to a 3.6 Varioram motor. Your subject is a little misleading.
It would make a great upgrade. With your car's G50 tranmission you won't have the transmission issues that earlier cars sometimes have.

ah, yes, without looking at the link I thought you wanted to put a vario-ram intake on a 3.2, my mistake. Yes a couple of people on the board have recently upgraded to a vario-ram 3.6, and yes, you have a great transmission for that swap as opposed to the people with the earlier 915 transmissions.

I thought Randy Wells was using a late model MAF, but the stock 3.2L intakes?

I'm thinking of putting a 964 dual plenum intake on my 3.2 (3.4 twin plug). I have an idea on how to run the plenum flapper using the DME...

Yeah - the thinking was to swap the engine to a 3.6 varioram rather than upgrade the 3.2 to varioram - sorry to mislead.

I'll try to search down some of the "converted" on this board a bit further.

The 3.6 on eBay has cycled a few times unsold, I believe, or there have been other similar 3.6's moving through eBay.

Is the asking price on this 3.6 typical or a little on the steep side?

Are there better alternatives on a cost/HP reward basis?

That ebay motor includes the transmission so that may have something to do with the price. The last motor I heard a price on was $7000 for a Euro 3.6 varioram.

Drago is correct about Randy's car. He does have the Varioram on the 3.2.

It's very doable, here is what it might look like installed in an earlier chassis,

A US version will be harder to do and have more electronic issues to deal with.
