Dead Carrera 3.2 :(

I have an '88 Carrera 3.2. Recently was driving it and it dies. Went into a gas station, pumped a full tank. Was pulling out and while getting into second gear engine suddenly stalled. As I was on a hill I tried to restart it by putting it the second gear but no go. Pulled over, tried a restarting a few times. Engine spins but won't catch.

Stuff I checked so far:

1. DME relay - I have a solid state F9 unit with pump prime + LEDs - all light up on engine start key position. Tried swapping relay anyway - no go
2. checked ignition with a spark plug attached to one of the cylinder wires - seemed to ignite fine
3. replaced reference + speed sensors. They tested around 1000 ohm as they should have but they were old so did it anyway
4. DME was checked a few months back by SW himself - he gave it a clean bill of health

This sounds like an injection issue but I could be wrong. What's the next step here? Any obvious things I missed?

Can you hear the fuel pump priming? Bad pump? Maybe take out the fuel filter and crank and see if it’s pumping.

Interesting thought. It has occurred to me as well. But I use that gas station pretty often and had 0 issues so far. I know I put in premium gas in it, $89 worth. So I'm wondering what could've went wrong.

Start with the basics. Pull a plug wire to check for spark and confirm fuel. BTW, on the 3.2 the fuel pump should only come on when the engine is cranking, so something is not wired correctly. (probably not your no-start issue but still not right)

He said he checked ignition and has sparks.
He also said he has a solid state F9 unit (DME relay) with pump prime.

well i did not see anywhere yet ..he has checked the fuse to the fuel pump...6th direction from the windshield..
You cannot hear the fuel pump running with the key on, only when you go over the spring in the ignition and at that time the engine is cranking no way he could hear the fuel pump
Start as mentioned with basics...! fuse remove inspect and if any replace..

Did you jump the fuel pump at the fuse box #2 to 3 and see if it runs ?

I agree to check on the quality of fuel you filled up with. Some stations had too much ground water in their gas I’ve seen over the years.

If not check for fuel at the fuel filter like I said. I have the same solid state DME relay you got so I’m sure if it’s supposed to be pumping, it is, so long as the pump is good.

If it isn’t air and spark, it’s probably fuel related.

Listen to Dave. But rather than carb cleaner spray, I prefer starting fluid spray. If it fires for a second or so, your ignition system is good. Then focus on fuel delivery.
