Locked out! Help!
Hi pelicans,
I need help! I have made a rookie move on my 86’ 930. I had a bad battery and installed a new one. Immediately after reconnecting the new battery, my alarm went off and the doors locked with my only key in the ignition. I’ve only had older Aircooled 911’s previously and not used to the electric door locks and alarm system operation. Any and all suggestions will be appreciated. Thank prbsurf7 |

Any competent locksmith should be able to help you. Either pick the lock or make you a new key.

If you have AAA coverage, they all must pass the 'locked vehicle drill' before they graduate basic training.

Crazy thought… I have never tried this personally, but when reading about how to remove the fuel gauge, I’ve read that people push it out from access inside the trunk.
If that’s true and your trunk is still open, maybe you can push it out and reach the key? Just trying to think of a creative idea.. It’s true a locksmith can probably get in with a slim Jim in seconds. |

Check your owners manual maybe prev owner jotted down the key code.
Btw, I went to a locksmith to see if he could make me some spares from my existing keys, he didn’t have key blanks, so that’s that. I never fiddled with my manual door locks when I had door card off to see how the slimjim could be situated to open the door…but the lock button is a lever action on both manual and electric, meaning any slim-Jim or hook rod could still manipulate the rod to open the door if you hit the right spot. The only place to work a slimjim is at the door handle at the lock, the locking linkage for interior knob is on the inner side of the door panel and can’t be accessed. Manual lock knob turns clockwise to Open - meaning the rod pushes towards the door latch/key lock. Central locking uses same linkage as manual only uses actuators. If the slim Jim has a hook it would need to be pulled upward. There might be more room to work with slim Jim or stiff wire hook by removing the aluminum trim piece at the lower window sill - pops up at door edge easily and then pull the rubber strip out. As for pushing out the fuel/oil pressure gauge from the trunk…. Good Idea. I would try that. Note there are a couple relays and heater flex hose in the way, so a very small hand and a very long arm might be needed. Forearm might be a bit scuffed but if a right hand mitt can get in gauge opening contorting in the trunk is mandatory to get the reach around. If the hand doesn’t fit… Take a long flexible rod about 3 ft should do, put an 90° hook on the end and try to activate the power window switch - I believe windows are still “hot” until the door is opened. Using an aluminum rod bent with a hook may get to the key loop rod maybe enough to wiggle, jar or push them out from the ignition. The hook saves them from falling on the floor. I don’t have central locking or know where the switch is for it. But a stiff wire (aluminum) can be bent along the way to reach it. Takes a lot of trial and error but can be done I’ve reached door lock buttons in all sorts of locations by twisting and bending an aluminum rod thru the door frame propped open with a inflatable bag and wedges. But 911’s cannot be entered via door frame. Working the from trunk will take two people, one to work the rod of choice and the other to watch where to guide the rod (up/down, forward/back, etc). One rod for opening doors I’ve used are the stainless steel car antennas found on Ford vehicles. they’re long enough to reach and stiff enough to activate buttons and switches. |

On my 86 930, I popped out the windshield when my son locked the key in the car.
The tow truck driver that Hagerty sent out was quite possibly the dumbest human I’ve ever met and couldn’t do a bloody thing.

Might be worth disconnecting the battery; maybe it will unlock. If not connect it again and maybe it will disarm the alarm this time.

Depending on how worn your door locks are you can get a vw key or any key that fits in the slot and slide it in and out and bump it open. I locked my keys in once and while waiting for the second AAA guy tried my friends key and open sesame.

I've seen videos with duct tape. But they were for newer cars...

Thanks much for all the suggestions. I tried the battery reconnect, all I get is alarm going off and hear the electric door lock working, trying to lock the already locked door. Going to try the gauge trick. Thanks again for all the replies.

Porsche locks are child’s play, I find it hard to believe that a locksmith can’t open it easily with a wafer pick or make an impression for you. As far as blanks go there are several and readily available to any locksmith. Here’s the key code card

I sourced my key blank from the local Porsche Dealer and had my locksmith cut it.
