Alternator help!!!! No idea what one I need
I’m losing my mind on this.
The motor came out of a 1982 sc. ![]() I know it’s not the original fan housing. If you run that part number it runs to 1975 The housing was so badly damaged and I couldn’t remove alternator, so in the trash it went. Fast forward few months. I bought a new fan housing with same part number. ![]() I have now ordered a 82 alternator, fan stuck out to far. I have ordered a 75 alternator, same result. I have a 74 coming Monday. Can someone verify what alternator fits this housing?!?

Jim, you can deal with the misalignment several ways.
First, you can use washers between the alternator studs and the fan housing. Space it so that the belt does not rub on the edge of the fan housing, plus about 1/10". The extra space is to allow for adjusting the belt by moving the big washers from inside the pulley halves to the outside, which moves the belt closer to the housing. Second, make a spacer. The WOSP 175Amp alternator that I installed in my car came with a spacer plate so that it would fit two different depths of housings. I would try to do that with several layers of aluminum sheet metal cut as a spacer for the fan housing, then stack them up to get the right clearance.

Another reason that rebuilding the failed alternator is always a better choice. Find a local rebuilder, and ask them to use the non Chinese bearings.

Jim,
You'll notice, in the doc I provided (above) that the 901 106 101 5R is the casting number, not the part number and that there are two part numbers that use that casting. regards, al

Sorry about that. Also, make sure the fan housing is mounted all the way forward on the engine case saddle, and that the alignment pin in the saddle is centered in the slot in the housing. You may have already done that--just making sure. .

you have to have the alternator mounting ring on the housing machined down to accept the later, "longer" alternator. '78 started with a deeper mounting ring in the housing.

Here's a 2-year only 78-79 226mm fan & housing. Note the deeper ring for the alternator.
