I am going to replace the alternator ground wire. What is the correct torque for this case nut? See the picture below.

Likely doesn't matter all that much at the top of the case. Dont sweat it. Gut 'n tite should be fine.

That worn out & rigid ground wire is identical to the one I pulled off my 3.0L this summer. Fresh new Porsche replacement wire from our host was inexpensive and flexible. Easy peasy.

See the picture below, I've circled the wire in red where it attaches to the alternator with a larger ground wire. I'm not sure that this is correct, it is just how mine was wired up and it worked fine. ![]() |

FYI for anyone replacing the ground wire:
The alternator is grounded through several paths. The ground wire is obviously one path, however it also gets grounded through metal-to metal contact from the alternator to the fan housing, and then from the fan housing to the engine case. Therefore, whenever I have the alternator out, I make a point of cleaning and putting some grease on the contact points between the alternator and engine case . The last time I was in there, the brown ground wire insulation was cracking like the picture above, so I replaced it with a braided strap, much like the strap between the transmission and chassis, and between the chassis and the negative battery terminal, but smaller in cross-section. I think I salvaged it off a parts motorcycle.
