Use spacer with Bilstein inserts to Boge struts?

OK, have both front Elephant Racing monoballs installed, torqued and pinned. Am inserting the threaded end of the Bilstein strut insert into the monoball now. 1989 Carrera.

Wait a minute - the threaded end of the strut protrudes over 1" past the top of the monoball. This is 1/2" more thread than I need to install the cupped washer and retaining nut. The end of the strut doesn't quite contact the hood, but it is very close.

Did I miss a spacer? I discarded the nylon spacer and rubber bump stop that came off with the Boge insert.
