Oil Filter???
i’ve been hunting around this morning looking for an oil filter thread or two. With all the oil threads popping up lately I was reminded about oil filter questions. I see lots of people running an orange Fram filter, including popular and very well known engine, builders of air cooled engines. I also know many people prefer the Mann oil filters, well some people believe that the German made ones are the only ones that are worthy, and anything made in China is crap. As I’m staring down the barrel of an oil and filter change on my 964 powered rat rod, I thought I would ask the community… What is the current consensus on the best oil filters to run?

A couple of relevant past threads:
Another oil filter thread! https://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/1136666-not-mahle-oil-filter.html Purolator Oil Filter My experience/opinion: I've never had a Fram filter on my 911, but I've had numerous filter quality issues in the past with Fram oil filters on other cars (including one memorable morning when the filter case split while in the driveway). I try to source European-made Mahle or Mann for my 911. I'd be tempted to set up a test rig for real comparison if my liquid particle counter at work was functioning, but sadly it's not... |

I use the Baldwin BT292. Micron Rating: 23 Nominal; 45 Absolute.
Neither Mahle nor Porsche Classic publish any filtration specs that I could find. I will assume they're just "rock catchers" since they aren't willing to share the data. Fram makes some good filters these days (depending on the product line) but the good ones don't fit. Fram also makes plenty of garbage filters. |

With the changes to the Mahle filters from china I would go with a Wix filter, not an Wix XP….plain non-XP. The XP has a lesser micron rating and meant to run more miles/racing usage. The regular filter has a better rating then any of the standard ones you’ll hear listed for our cars on the forum. Way better than the rock catcher with 45 micron!

Canton has the 25-561 unit. "Comes with a 8 mu filter element." System1 has the "Extra Tall 7.5" filter. This comes with a 35 mu element. None of their other units come with 1"-12 thread. System1 states that the 35 mu filter is good "up to 20w-50 oil." Neither Canton nor System1 have any info on how they actually rate their filters for filtration. |

You want a filter with a pressure bypass.

I love System-1 filters. I was at the HRC races this weekend at Daytona. Lots of old Porsche race cars from 60’s 911’s, to 914’s, to DP 935 cars like the Jäegermeister car. Many, and I mean MOST, ran Fram oil filters, which was very intersting to see. Others ran WIX. Given our “snobbery” on the forums it was interesting to see what the racing community runs, given how much they spend on their motor builds to be competitive, and how hard they use their motors. Yes, I say “snobbery” a bit tongue in cheek.
