‘89 3.2 Engine Case Crack?

Bit of a short backstory, bought the car a while back not running with not much history. Got a fair deal what felt like at the time to give me some peace of mind if there were any big repairs.
Was cleaning the engine while it’s been out and came upon what appears to be a crack. Has anyone ever had a crack here or have recommendations on what to do next?

Just a remnant from the original casting of the case.

Can't imagine a case cracking in a perfect straight line like that....

Kind of what I thought also. There is one spot however that is making me a little nervous.
This spot appears deeper than the rest.

If it was a crack and not a casting fossil, it would probably be leaking oil. I vote fossil

It is a casting line - clear as daylight.

Does oil seep from the crack? If it were a casting artefact, it would disappear upon grinding. You could sand back the worst spot a quarter mm and confirm it vanishes.

In answer to your question, the engine comes apart. I'd grind back in a v profile to half depth then tig weld the outer side before grinding the inner side down to half depth and welding that side. Pay attention to the integrity of any oil channels which may be affected.

If the crack had opened up at all I'd see if some very gentle clamping can hold it tight together in its original position.

I'd assume distortion on a weld this size will demand machining the case faces and a line bore.

I lightly sanded down a couple areas. It appears it is still remaining. I bought a crack detection kit to be sure so when it comes in I’ll be running some tests.

I wouldn't sweat it.

If it does leak, JB weld.

I'm in the parting line fraction, but do keep us posted if the leak detection kit proves otherwise!

Was there oil in the engine when you got it, and did it leak? Even without running that big of a crack would let it seep through.

Motor has had standard oil levels in it for my entirety of owning it. Extremely small drip but not from this location.
Hopefully detection kit shows up soon. Suspense is killing me! Motor turns over freely and smoothly. Does not feel like anything is binding.

Should I entertain the idea of a thorough JB weld job along the seam? This is no show car. I intend to drive the wheels off this car. Life is too short not to drive your dream car if I’m able and god willing.

No do not JB weld or do anything, don't fall victim to your fear just yet, there will be plenty scarier things to come. Look at your first picture, the crack continues up and over the top of a circular ridge then stops. How could the crack go up to a reinforced area then stop.

Wait to see if it weeps, just leave it completely alone till then. Listen for scary engine sounds, that will keep you up at night But I know what you mean, I had some weird looking casting marks when I had the engine out. I used a really good magnifier (for electronic components) and a very bright light and eventually accepted it. I suggest you do the same, it's amazing what you can see with 10x magnification.

I appreciate the affirmation everyone. That’s a good idea to use a magnification tool to inspect further also. I may try and find a good cheap option on Amazon tonight. Gotta love it when you order it tonight and it’s on the doorstep before I wake up the next morning!
I’ll keep everyone posted with the crack test

Its a casting mark. Quick look for pics of 3.2 engines finds this one on Bring a trailer. It has the exact same mark in the same place.

THANK YOU!! That makes me feel a lot better. That’s the kind of info I was searching for. Onward with the project and cleaning.

Next up, new cams!
