Those Stupid $100 Coupons!

Both times have made me spend money that I wouldn't have spent, for little return.

This one sat in my drawer until today (the deadline), and I just couldn't resist.

So:

2 collapsable oil return tube kits ($30 x 2) $60 (needed those)
Fan belt $13 (didn't really need, but nice to have a spare)
Oil filter $12 (expensive, but always useable)

That's all I really needed - and only really needed the oil tubes.

But, that's only $85.

So -

Black stainless steel license plate frame $30

Still a long way to go, so

Factory cheap plastic shift knob (mine is a little worn) $80!
A couple of stickers got me there.

The parts guy was nice and suggested I check the Accessories catalog. Would you believe that in looking through that whole thing (shirts, mugs, keychains, etc.) there wasn't a single thing that I wanted, even if it was free?!?!

4 996 oil filters
2 996 air filters
2 1988 Carrera oil filers

total $235 -$100 = $135

Still seems like too much...

Well I ended up getting a Laguna Jacket and bought it from Rusnak in Thousand Oaks for full retail 225.00 so it got me over the 200. limit. I was always going to get one off ebay but heard they run big so wanted to try one on. Good thing as a Medium was all I needed, I'm 5'9' and about 178. Nice jacket too real well made and in the USA.

I went to a particular NW dealer also. There the discount actually meant something. I was lucky to be working on a particular project but still the 'official porsche parts' only came to about $85. So I got the manual window regulator update kit for the passenger side since my wife is always commenting on how difficult it is to roll up the window.

In defense of our host, I went to the local Porsche dealer and gave them a list of the various goodies I needed, and with the coupon it was $113. Pelican's prices for the SAME PARTS with NO DISCOUNT was $116.

Despite this huge plug for PP, expect this thread to disapear soon.

I used mine last Christmas, but after that I realized that no matter how I worked it I ended up paying what it would have cost to get the same stuff from Pelican, and I have ne reason to support the dealer, but I do want to support Pelican.

I agree...and guys? There is no sales tax in Oregon. Not yet, anyway. I used my coupon to buy 4 MFI fuel filters from Sunset..Average cost of $34 each or so...Wayne's price is $56.15, that's about 6-8 bucks less than most dealerships charge without the coupon.

So what's "Worthy of Support"??

I think we all agree that this site is -- partly or mostly because of the list. We often dis PP (formerly Automotion) but should they get some support because they put out a nice and useful catalog? Should the dealer get some support because they stock or can get a lot of things locally and represent the factory? And, should the local car repair place get support because its all vegan, has peace signs in the windows and recycles everything they can get their hands on, and are a local business? (true facts, but I live in Eugene where we also have a lesbian auto repair shop).

I can't see how any post is going to really give any support to the dealer's parts department.

Everyone knows their prices are higher. I'd never go there except for being a sucker and falling for their silly coupon deal.

NOTICE: Pelican now carries and offers (and can special order) *any* dealer part that you can think of. Simply type the OEM part number into our database search engine above, and see what turns up...

Wayne,

Now if only you would accept the coupons... I too let this one lapse. Just don't need any more T-shirts, Jackets or Sunglasses.

Those coupons (two thus far in one year) are great.....Forget about parts unless its a dealer only exclusive. I just bought my wife a fantastic pair of Porsche Sunglasses. On the last coupon I picked up a pair myself. Consider the value in their clothing when you get $100 off the $200 purchase requirement. You'll never get a great deal at a dealer in parts....come on!

A great example is I needed a rear window seal for my pop-out window. I wanted OEM so I made a cost comparison list with Pelican, Vertex, Tweeks, Performance and my Local P-dealer. Prices ranged from $52.00 to $105.00. AMAZING!!!! Pelican got the order and the dealer could not come close at $105.00! PCA is giving this nifty little coupon as a gift....if parts are a pain to buy, then at least look at their boutique catalog. Hey, eight high end Porsche T's for the family for $100.00. Not a bad deal.

I am looking forward to the next one this fall, if they continue with this program. Porsche stuff is great stuff.........

I went to my local dealer today with coupon in hand, but the parts man said Porsche was out of the "antique car" business and had sold all its parts for older cars to Stoddard. Oil filters and fan belts was all we came up with.

My coupon went unused this also. The local dealer is only a mile away and he supports the Club by sponsoring our track events. I'd like to give them some business but it's hard to justify paying 20% over list for parts. The parts counter is next to the shop. It's interesting to see all the 996 and Boxters with the motors out for replacement.
An axle for my '86 Carrera was $504 from the local dealer, $304 from Stoddard vs about $200 from Pelican.

My coupon went unused and I had plenty of stuff I needed to buy. But I was able to find it cheaper elsewhere, paying full price than getting a measley $100 off at the dealer. Porsche of Arlington ain't bad at all and they support our local PCA. But their prices are just ridiculous any way you cut it. Thanks PCNA, but I need tie rods more than I need tie clips.

Those coupons are useless at a local dealer. My local dealer (Rizza Ford-Porsche in Orland Park, IL) is a joke. I kid you not. Hate to badmouth anybody, but $100 for an oil return tube???????? That's right ONE oil return tube. Holy Jesus you gotta be kidding me!!!!!!!!!

The only way the coupons make any sense is to use them for mail order parts. Examples: Hendrick Porsche in NC, Hennessey Porsche in GA, Sunset Porsche........ But with the discount, you're gonna be really close to Pelican's prices. Might as well give Wayne the sale. He's gone above and beyond anything else i've seen related to Porsche parts and tech. info.

I don't think you can beat Pelican considering all the stuff they provide. The website, message board, tech. info., customer service and depth of knowledge here is second to none IMO.

It sounds like some of you guys got good pricing here at Sunset Porsche in Portland..... However, I called to order a turn signal switch for my 73 and was quoted a price of $302.60. Pelican price is $149.00. When I told the guy I could find the part elsewhere for half his price he said "Let me see what I can do on my price", he came back with a price of $250.00. Which, if I would have used the coupon would have put the part at the normal price of Pelican, Stoddard and others. Seems like all dealers are still hit or miss on pricing. For my money, just another reason to support Pelican.

Jeff
