Steve, there is very little space under the early seats, less than 2". I can hardly get my hand under it. I recently recovered the seats, so I don't want to swap seats to put a powered sub underneath. If I don't have good alternatives, I'll just put up with the tinny sound from the door speakers and dash-mounted tweeters around town, and use my AirPods on longer trips. A really nice feature of AirPods and similar items: they also provide noise cancelling, which makes long trips less tiring. They are very effective at cancelling road noise and wind noise.
Yes I corrected my post to reflect my subwoofer is indeed on the "shelf" created by the rear seat being folded down...

Not the rear shelf by the rear window...

Erik

I bought a 964 Targa that I thought just had a Porsche Classic radio in it.
Found out once it arrived that it also had Focal Speakers in the doors and rear deck and a Mosconi amp under the passenger seat. A lot of money spent and it wasn’t even advertised by the selling dealer.
The gen 2 Porsche Classic Radio is buggy as hell if you play MP3s from thumb drive or USB. I removed it and just go Bluetooth from my phone into the Mosconi. The Focal speakers are overly bright but the Mosconi has a DSP so I have been able to dial it down.
Bass was the missing link so I disconnected the rear speakers and installed Focal Isub Twins in the rear floors.
By no means does it sound like even a single 12” sub but it’s way better than it was before.
I bought a Blau Stuttgart to go into the dash and I’m going to connect it to my disconnected rear deck speakers in case I ever wanted FM or the nostalgia of a cassette….mostly I just think the Stuttgart looks like it belongs in a 964. The Porsche Classic radio looked good too but I can’t tolerate something so stupid that it can’t actually shuffle music (even though it has shuffle mode) and plays you the same set of songs every time you get in the car.

Ant: Yes, I understand that the bass frequencies have very little directionality, however they do need to be coupled to the passenger compartment. I had a factory-installed sub in the trunk of a 2007 Mustang and it worked well, but that didn't have a hard wall between the trunk and the passenger compartment. I'm more concerned about putting a sub in the frunks, because the dash is pretty sealed off from the passenger compartment.

I also have seen the subs that fit into a spare tire. Interesting design.

'il give you an example, hopefully it will help alleviate your concerns somewhat;
I remember listening to the radio in my car on the drive way one day [many years ago now when I was involved in building car sound systems], the system in question was fully bespoke i.e.; separate amplification for high, mid, and of course low and sub bass, using dedicated electronic cross-overs etc, as suggested earlier; the subs were fitted to the spare wheel and trunk etc, anyway, I left the radio on in the car while I got out and went into the garage to get something, the garage was a few feet away from the car, what shocked me initially as I walked into the garage was how convincingly the bass from the car radio system seemed to be coming out of the radio in the back of the garage' which just happened to be tuned to the same radio station!
Anyway, I hope this helps with what ever you decide.

Ant, thanks again. I may try putting the sub in the frunk just to see how well it works there.
