'86 Carrera temps in 95 deg weather?

What should the oil temp guage read on a 95 degree day with the A/C on?
I should know the answer to this but I can't remember...
I made some oil cooler changes and I'm wondering if one of my changes made things worse instead of better.

It's 95 degrees here in NH and my temp guage is reading a little over 9 o'clock on the highway with the A/C on. I can't remember seeing it that high under normal conditions. It doesn't often get that hot here though so I could just be forgetting.

Things I changed:
A) Larger (thicker) Kokeln oil cooler in stock location
B) Ducting to block off area below horns. The idea was keep air that came throught the bump notch from escaping out the bottom.

please let me know, this is really bothering me,
Chris

Last summer when I took off to the 1st Rainforest Roundup, I ended up driving through central BC in my 86 when the temps were in the mid 30s (that's C, not F) and my oil temps (with A/C on) were near the bar above the 9 O'clock positon.

Now the "Duh" moment. I never even thought about the fact that the big fat ugly vinyl bra I had on was covering the air intake for the front cooler. The bra is now off, but we haven't had enough hot weather recently to see if it makes much difference. In normal temps, it seems to be running cooler.

Chris - not exactly answer to your question but may help determine baseline.

'86 911 3.2
AC system completely removed
B&B Exhaust w/heet sheets
Stock fender mounted oil cooler (sealed/ducted underneath with fog lamp removed and fabricated scoop at side marker)
Elephant Racing hard line (pressure side only)
. . . and a Cool Collar

Highway temps at 90 degrees / 75% humity with hard driving keep temp gauge around 8:00 position (just over the first dash). Road Atlanta June 2 with temps mid-80s saw same temp reading.

Thanks guys, keep them coming.
Mike, I'm thinking of removing the useless fog/driving lights and posibly adding a fan. I'm also tinkering with the idea of a wind "dam" to the right of the right fog light to keep air from spilling off the front.

High thirties (centigrade) ac full on, cruising about 110 mph my gauge will read between 9 and 11 o'clock. This car has no rear spoiler. On a car with spoiler and no aircon temp stays just below 9 o'clock. Fan comes on about 11 o'clock position which makes me suspect Porsche was not concerned about temps below 11 0'clock

Here's another for a baseline
Stock 3.0 in '83 SC, Carrera oil cooler with fan, and AC with Sanden compressor. On a 95 degree day and AC running, my oil temp guage never goes past the 9 oclock mark. It usually stays at about the 8 oclock position unless sitting too long at idle.

On my '87 and '88 with the ac running on the highway I usually see the temp guage hovering around the 200 mark. It will easily climb to 9 oclock in town though. This is in Oklahoma and Texas during the summer where temps are nudging 100 most days in July/Aug.

It was around 101 here in Davis yesterday at 4pm, and my '88 reached about 8:30 on the gauge. My AC is stripped out though.

Ditto with steve911 here in NY. VERY hot and humid, needle at 9:00 give or take 15 minutes. I know that makes sense to most.

regards,

OK, that confirms my suspicions, my temps are too high. I hate to remove the blockoff underneath but that seems the most likey culprit.

Turn off the A/C, Chris, & sweat it out like the rest of us commoners!
[easy for me to say with no A/C & temps already higher than I'd like...] ;^)

Chris - I would suggest keeping the block-off (valence to cooler) and remove fog lamp - made a big difference for me at the track - even had to tape off the opening in January (30 F) to get some heat in the engine. I covered the fog lamp openings with wire mesh, painted flat black and also route my brake duct cooling hoses to same.

But Mark, Some of us aren't naturally "cool".
A/C is my only hope...

Here is what I did. I have an 86 3.2 in my car with no A/C. Mocal cooler and SS braided lines. I cut an opening and put in ductwork and a fan. I covered the opening with an upsidedown horn grill. It is roughly the size of your foglight opening. On really hot freeway cruising I see between 180 and 210F. Also remember I have a battery box in front of my cooler.

Temp in high 90s yesterday in eastern Iowa. With a/c on in urban driving, temp needle rose to 8:30 position, lower at highway speeds. Without a/c on, temp rarely rises above 8oclock position.

i used to see around the 9 oclock mark (a little high or a little low depending) under most circumstances. I have since sealed the area below the cooler/valance and now on the freeway I see a different behavior. I go up to about 8:45, but if I sit in traffic for a couple of minutes and then get on the road again it will drop down to the first mark. It's almost as if one of the thermostats sticks a little (everything gets hot, so it must open some) and then once it gets to a certain point it opens the rest of the way up and then gets really cool.

Definitely sealing below the valance made a difference, lowered my temps. I have also removed the fog lights. I also made a "scoop" of sorts that sticks out about an inch at the bottom outside corner of the foglight opening to help force more air in the opening rather than sliding off of the bumper.
