Need engine assemply help
I'm helping a friend rebuild his engine. We're ready to put the heads on, but things aren't lining up. What's wrong? Here's a pic:

Now it works.
Yeah, that engine is bollocks'ed up. You can ship it out to me and I'll fix it up for you. Hell I'll even pay shipping, that is just the kind of guy I am.

Sheesh dude, somehow you managed to get TWO engines bolted together. Since I seem to know what's going on here, just send them my way and I will send you back a proper one.

type 912
This is a picture of a type 912 engine taken at Karl Thompsons shop in Long Beach. He recently bought a 917 coupe chassis that he is building for one of his toys. If any of you Porsche geeks ever get a chance to visit his shop, do so. This is a no bull*&%# shop that has an ear to the ground in Porsche Race cars. Want a new 771 motor? Karl has three of them, $85K each. Do you even know what a 771 motor is, or where it went? Karl has a parts line of older Porsche race cars that the factory doesn't have.

Stop everything right now. I can see some major safety issues if you proceed. In fact, that engine is likely to be unsafe no matter what you do. Mercifully, I can arrange for a special jig that this motor can be mounted to, which would pose no danger to you whatsoever. No charge whatsoever, but the engine would need to be transported to Washington State ASAP. Those other guys offering to help you out, well they might have ulterior motives. Better be safe than sorry.

Sweet! Love the dual sided engine stand. I guess something that long would be just a tad unstable.
Now what is hiding in the background. Looks like some High-butterfly MFI to my eye. Slide valve? Are those from that 917 engine?

According to my brief homework. Type 771 was the eight cyl. used in the 908. Is this correct?

There is your problem. You need to find a Ferrari Testarossa Workshop Manual immediately. That is a Flat 12 Boxer from Italy.

I see the problem....you only have 6 heads....
So....pound some soft wood into 6 of the holes to plug them up....then put the heads on (3 heads on each side). If you have to rebuild again....just switch the heads over to the other 6 jugs! Simple eh? And if Superman gets to play with that beast....so do I. Drool....wipe....drool....wipe.... Bob

It's obviously the level of air pressure down near sea level pushing things out of alignment. At just over a mile high the tolerances come in to line, send it to Boulder and we'll get it fixed for you.
