engine drop...so close!
I was able to get started on the engine drop today so I can install the new clutch...and so far I am doing ok. Most of the wires and connections are pretty well marked and color coded, and the engine is down about 5" and just about seperated from the tranny. This is where I am stuck.
The car is on a lift, and the tranny is being supported with a floor jack. The engine is being supported by a pallet on a fork lift...but I can't get the two things apart. The fan hits the rear of the car if I try to angle the engine, and the bolts on the tranny just won't clear. Ideas? My only thought is to drop the tranny as well, even though I really don't need to. Thanks.

I would drop the tranny as well. Also easier to fit the engine.

Just drop the tranny. You are only talking about another 30 minutes of work to disconnect the mount and wiring.

I would just drop the tranny also, inside the car at the rear under the carpet is a plate (center tunnel), under it is a allen screw to take the shifter loose, the drive shafts, ground strap, speedo sensor, should be it, on a 915 tranny you have to take the clutch spring off to release the bearing, woops also for got you have to disconnect the clutch cable to take it out, really easier just to drop the tranny along with the engine, Kevin

Ha ha, you are a victim of the crazy notion of dropping the engine alone is an easier job. I would not be around when you are trying to put it back, wiggling the engine with a jack to line up with the tranny. That can kill people.
Push it back up, attach it to the tranny, and drop the whole thing together, then separate it on the floor.

4 votes to drop it with the tranny, plus my vote from a previous post-makes 5...
Good luck on this, one thing I found is that even though the bolts were off between the engine and tranny I still had to use a pry bar to seperate the two. TTYL- -Rick-

Forklift, jack, lift, motor, tranny, and you all under the car. Sounds crowded. Let us know what you decided and how it came out.

I'd always drop the engine/trans as a unit as well. In the best of cases, it can be tough to get the engine remated to the trans when both are out of the car.
Drop 'em both. I used to do it with one floor jack at the balance point on the engine/trans assembly and the other on the car (I'd use a 4' length of 2x6 to spread the load). Once I dropped the engine/trans assembly as far as it would go with the one jack, I'd jack the car up with the other... high enough to pull the engine/trans out from underneath the car. ![]()

A vote of dissent!
He's using a lift guys! With access to a lift, absolutely drop the engine only. I'm going to guess that you haven't removed the clutch arm, helper spring, and cable. This is probably what's holding you up. Without these things removed, you cannot separate the engine and trans. Sure, in my garage, laying on my back I drop them as a unit. When I am at my friend's shop and able to use a lift in conjunction with a floor jack, it's a no-brainer to drop just the engine unless you need the transmission out for maintainance on it as well. 8 to 1 in favor of dropping both. No contest,

well the tranny will drop today as well...going to make it easier to mate and install when I am done. I already disconnected the clutch cable, and backup light wires...so really all I can think of off the top of my head is the speedo cable and CV joints. How does the speedo cable come out?

Oh...here is how she is at the moment, as you can see if I would have started off with dropping the tranny as well you would probably see the whole thing out of the car instead. So chalk this one up to a first time learning experience and press on.
otherwise, I feel ok with this project and should have it all back together today. ![]() ![]()

If you have a mechanical speedo, it connects at nose cone of the transmission. I think a 17mm wrench will work.

No, you just unscrew the connector that keeps the speedo cable mated to the speedo mechanism in the tranny.

that is what I meant, just didn't choose the best words to describe it.
It's the metal housing around the cable correct?

Make sure you disconnect the shift linkage inside the car by the rear seat, Kevin

well after a long hot day the engine and tranny are back in the car, new clutch kit and clutch fork installed and I wish I new if it was all better!
After I got it all together and started it up for a quick second and then shut it down...as it's now leaking fuel. On the fuel return side at the pressure regulator (993) the brass fitting is stripped and will not seal up the line so it's leaking. The engine did start though, and everything else seems ok. I am going to get with Harald and see where he got the fitting from as one side is small (original hose and fitting from the 2.7 maybe) and the other side is larger for the 993. Any ideas?
