I installed the 930S steering wheel and thought I would share some unexpected pro’s with you guys, esp. those thinking about the upgrade. More room, arms a little straighter when driving, more room around the knees, easier to get in and out of the car, (I am 6'2") better visibility, finger tips closer to turn signal lever, steering action seems a little quicker which I expected. Thanks for all the info on the install.

Most pro drivers would tell you that your arms shouldn't be straighter when driving... Hands at 9 and 3, elbows at your side, and your butt firmly wedged as far back in the seat as you can get it -- that gives you the best road feel.

I had one for a few weeks. I wrap my thumbs around the steering wheel at 9 & 3 and the "corner" there would attempt to pull my thumbs off. It was also a little too thick for me to get a good grip on (small hands). I reluctantly sold it. Beautiful wheel otherwise.

With my thumbs like this, they would get stuck in the wheel.
![]() Some may not likthe thumbs wrapped around but that's how I was instructed. I must admit, on in car video I find myself straying from this position some. Link to article on 9 and 3 position. -Chris

I usually try to keep my thumbs more vertical than that... a tip a rally driver gave me a few years back to prevent gripping the wheel too tightly and both losing road feel and increasing fatigue as a result.

I usually keep my thumbs out of the inside of the wheel. I might find out when I get to the track that it’s not right but it’s a habit carried over from 4x4 driving. If the wheel takes off on you it can break your thumbs. I don’t know if the same can happen if you abruptly exit the track too.

I just picked up Vic Elfords book and he says the same thing; Lay your thumbs along the wheel to avoid dislocating/breaking your thumbs.

for the correct distance from the wheel my pca instructor recommended if you stick your arms straight out you should be able to bend your hands at your wrist over the steering wheel. this allows for the correct amount of elbow bend. thumbs on the outside or along top of wheel.

All this talk about these lately makes me think I'm going to get one. They are very nice looking, and functional. One question though is why does pelican sell a "930s Style Steering Wheel Spacer"? Do you need this when installing the wheel, or is it an option?

I feel my best and most responsive with my hands in proper place (9and3), arms at slight bend (enough bend to where if i were to turn the wheel one turn over i could do so without letting go of my hand position), and knees slightly bent always. I also don't like laying back when driving, i usually am upright in my seat.

The spacer gives an extra 3/4" (roughly) of horizontal clearance between steering wheel rim and the dash pad above the instruments, where some feel the clearance is otherwise a bit tight.
If it is the eccentric spacer, it also moves the physical center of the wheel vertically up about the same amount, so it is off-axis with the rotation center, this gives more thigh room and I got used to the eccentric action right away. Don't know if you need the vertical room, depends on seat, thigh, etc.

I just installed the spacer after having the wheel on for about a year. I did it to give myself a little more leg room (I am 6'2") by allowing me to move the seat back one click and up just a touch. The eccentric is a bit odd but not really noticable.

The spacer also lets you see your gauges.

Note also that the stock wheel is positioned eccentrically...surprise!

We like ours too. The grip is a little bigger...but that has been ok.
