RSR bumper and Center cooler done! Many pictures inside

Hi guys,
I just completed a bunch of work on my '75 911S (930 engine transplant car), and wanted to show off some pictures...I was rushing to finish up this car because our first child is due in less that 2 months!

POR-15ed the front pan, then installed a Setrab cooler with Aeroquip Socketless AN12 hose. This stuff seems to work great, and as a bonus, it slips over the metric fittings from a short Carrera oil line. This was based on a tip from Warren, and seems like a very good, cheap way to get AN converted to metric.

Plenty of clearance behind the cooler. More than an inch to the pan. Temperatures never got above 190 on this 95 degree day!

Also installed a Rennspeed RSR/IROC front bumper. This took me a ton of time to drill, make brackets for, and test fit, because I've never done any bodywork before. I have a new respect for professional body guys...it was tough, and my results are OK but not pro. All the brackets and shock replacements are made from aluminum stock (as are the damped cooler mounts) and saved a good bit of weight up front.

Also completed a bunch of other stuff-
-replaced all the fuel lines with braided Aeroquip lines
-installed an aluminum transmission sideplate
-installed a second Turbo fuel pump and new relays and fuses
-put in RSR rocker seals
-Sachs Sport clutch, flywheel and pressure plate, etc etc etc.

The finished product - I still have to wire up the lights, but couldn't wait to drive the car. I'm just getting tired of living in the garage . Also have to adjust the hood and maybe raise up the front. It's really slammed.

It's a hoot to drive this thing: 0-60 in under 5 seconds on the GTech. People in this town look at me like I'm in a UFO.

Now can I do Turbo flares and an IROC rear bumper in 6 weeks?

Looks super! I think I would definitely raise the front though unless Davis, CA is curb free! Who did you pick up the cooler and lines from? Your side view mirror looks pretty sharp too!

By the way, do you mean just rear turbo flares? If you do fronts also you'll have to replace that nice new front bumper.

Colin:
Looks great! I like your UFO!
After you install rear flares (and some kinda tail), I'd leave it alone and enjoy.
Is the turbo powerplant stock?
Really neat looking.
Not too low in the front for my taste.
Post more pictures when you get further along. So far.... incredible!

That's because your car is so damn racy looking! Wow. Looks outstanding. Silver makes that car so right looking.

I'd agree you need to get the front up a bit. Really snorting the pavement right now without a little tire to fender exposure. Just my opinion..........

That cooler install is top notch. The fastening job to the tub looks very solid and clean. After seeing your handywork, you'll knock out those flares and bumper job no problem!

Great work Colin. Two big thumbs up!

I did the same tranformation to mine, minus the oil cooler plus the rear bumper and IROC tail, last week. I finished up at the last minute for the Laguna event. The paint doesn't quite match the original color, so I have to dissemble everything for repaint. I got all body parts from Rennspeed also. While most parts fit great, the tail and the front bumper light's housing need more attention. The brake cooling kit is my next project follow by the oil cooler. Colin, the cooler looks great. Where did you get it and how much?
Here's a picture of my car from last weekend:

Looks Good! But I would think twice about turbo flares. The 9" fronts will require a different front bumper cap.

SC/Carrera 9" rear flares also need a bumper designed for them, as does the 11" turbo rear flare.

Since the front is pretty much done your only option is the back, the 9s will look good w/ the existing fronts, the 11s odd w/o matching front 9s

cowtown, did you make those oil cooler brackets? Why are they box shaped?

Colin,
Looks good. I will have to stop by for a ride soon. Last time I saw the bumper it was on your table and not even painted. Great progress.

Bill V is right about the flares. You must have the proper bumpers to mate up to the flares. I would go with SC/Carrera 9" flares in the rear and get the fiberglass rear bumper to go with.

Here's a pic of my car with similar treatment. Please forgive the wheels they were cut and paste since my restoration is not yet complete on the 7 and 9 X 16 Fuchs. Also, I did not have to add the rear flares as my car is an SC.

If you don't mind me asking, why don't more 911 owners use the nose mounted oil cooler as opposed to the fender mounted one? I'd assume that the nose mounted route is more efficient at cooling the oil. Is it because of not being able to put on a front license plate? Trying to keep the car original?

Hi,
Thanks for all the feedback!

About the flares, I was thinking of just doing SC/Carrera flares in the rear so that I could use an IROC bumper back there, and leaving the front alone. On a side note, according to Peter at Rennspeed, there is only one front IROC piece that works with mt 75's "baby" flares, up through Carrera flares - I guess they are all the same. Turbo flares in front would indeed require a new bumper, and that's not in the cards right now. Anyway, with my schedule the way it is, I think I'm just going to drive and enjoy the car for a while before I tackle any more big projects. Goal #1 is to have a running, enjoyable hotrod in 8 weeks, not a lump of immovable metal in the garage. I'm also not sure whether I would go steel or FG, as I haven't really researched flares yet.

In the meantime I have some smaller things to do, like door stays, some wiring, H4s to replace the ratty H1s (anyone want to trade? Seriously...), and some bigger torsion bars in back.

In answer to the other questions:

-The Turbo engine is sort-of stock, running at 0.8 bar with no intercooler. But its' got a Euro exhaust replacing the thermal reactors, so it should be running 260-270 laggy HP on a good day. I've significantly lightened the car by stripping the interior and painting POR-15 where all the tar and soundproofing used to be. Also removed about 70lbs worth of AC hoses, condensers, alarm system, etc. It weights in at about 2450 lbs right now.

-The oil cooler brackets are box shaped for strength, and because it's what I had lying around my garage All the hardware in standard size is Grade 8, and all the metric stuff is 8.8. Probably overkill when the peices they fasten are aluminum and thin sheetmetal.

-Right now, wheels are 16x7 Fuchs all around with Kumho 205s. Yes, there are some traction "issues". It's very easy to cook the rear tires pulling away from a stop sign. I think I may be able to get a 215 or even 225 with lots of camber in the back.

-The sideview mirror is a plastic piece that was on the car when I got it 10 months ago. I always thougtht I would go to the rectangular stock mirrors like the "real" IROC cars had. I have two of them in a box, so I may get rid of the installed mirror.

-Andy and Lothar, your cars look great!!! Something for me to work toward. I have a Turbo tail waiting for when I flare the car and add an intercooler. Not IROC, but functional...

-The Setrab was on clearance at heintzperformance.com for $200. The AQP hose is from racerpartswholesale.com

fastred,
I know on the longhood cars the reason that more people don't go to the nose cooler is that we have to modify the nose of the car to get adaquate airflow. If it's mounted straight up then the air can't flow from outbehind the cooler. I'm not sure why on the newer cars.

Thanks for the response, i've always been curious, plus i think the oil cooler opening in the nose is really good looking. BTW cow, your car's beautiful, need a tail to proportion that new nose now.
