Replacement dashboards

The dashboard on my '86 911 is warped due to Sun exposure. I was thinking of eventually replacing it but I'm a bit confused as to what I need to buy.

Dashtops sells a replacement dash for $84, but I'm not sure if its actually a dashboard, or just a plastic *cover* for the original dash. Anyone know?

Dashtops version = http://www.dashtops.com/dashboard/buydash.cfm/6151

Then there is Pelican Parts which has a 911 dash for $440. This is probably the real thing, but I'd rather spend $84 instead of $465 if they are the same thing.

Pelican Parts version = C-552-055-05

Thanks.

-M

I have a "dashtop" I'll sell you if you're interested, but there is a good reason I didn't use it. It is an injection moulded plastic shell that you glue on top of your existing dash. Not bad if you aren't too particular.

Nope, can't do that. My current dash is warped enough that covering it won't really help.

I'll just have to wait a bit and spring the cash for the real thing...

Butcher your current warped dash, then lay the cap on.

I'm in the market for a cap. My old dash is leather and it has pulled itself apart in a big way. But I can't pull the winsheild and so on right now. But I can't bear to look at this dash any longer.

Any pics? price? shoot me a private if you like.

You're on the right track. Do it right, or leave it be. You will kick yourself having to do it all over again if you do not like the end result. See

lateapec911: I can't see how you can fit the cap without pulling the windshield. So if you pull the windshield, why not do it right and replace the dashpad? It's the same work, and will look tons better than the cap. Besides, you can pull the windshield and replace it with no trouble, assuming your windshield is still fine - no cracks or chips. Worst case you might need a new rubber gasket for it.

See my previous thread on this topic for more details and some pictures of the replacement. Also, the 101 book is very useful.

Good luck

LeRoux

Really??? I thought these caps didn't require the windsheild being removed!? In that case, you are right...it's a no brainer. I was trying to avoid yet another project....

You just set the cap doen on top of the old dash. It covers it completely and looks a heck of a lot better than a really bad dash. They come with adhesive if you would like to glue it down, but mine looks good as is. I will wait til I have to pull the windshield to replace the pad.

Here is a better picture! You can get one with the a/c vent if appropriate.
