Check out the seats in the 75... comfy looking, eh?

Engine...

http://members.shaw.ca/stephen.olafs...s/IMG_5085.jpg

I've really got to stop thinking about this car... :D

You could give yourself a weight advantage by ditching that compressor on the right side of the engine. I don't think BC gets that warm in the summer, does it?

exc911ence 09-10-2003 01:00 PM

I would if it didn't work! The A/C in my 924S doesn't even work so it stays in the 911. Besides, I already have a rear-engined, air-cooled lightweight!

It's the orange one, not the black one... too bad! :)

That is a very nice looking car. I drive my '79 every single day, and it seems happier for it. As long as there isn't salt on the roads, and you occasionally clean any built-up gunk on the underside off during the rainy season, I think it would be fine.

dougcl 09-10-2003 01:57 PM

I can't say this enough... keep the mid year body stock. Unmolested cars are getting harder to find, and they have a look all their own. They're prettier than the wider SCs and Carreras IMO, and stand out by comparison, having only been manufactured for three years.

And to the person who suggested stripping the undercarriage and applying POR15, no no no. This will destroy the value of the car and accomplish little, if anything.

As for the AC... ditch it altogether, since you don't need it in BC. The engine will run cooler.

There are some days where you need it here, especially since we just went 4 months without a drop of rain! Besides, it works and it's original equipment, why remove it?

Anyway, the car has an auxiliary oil cooler in the front fender. High engine temps are not an issue.

Have you driven the car? For longevity, the 2.7 is happiest running at 180F. If you're running 180-195 on hot days with the air, you're fine.

Have an appointment to drive it on Sunday. The owner is a member of the local PCA so I am familiar with him and the car. He drives it quite regularly and has had no problems in city or on the highway.

It's going to be tougher to gauge the thermal situation with the weather cooling off. Keep an eye on it though.

By the way, you can remove the air and retain the blower under the dash. I find this arrangement sufficient except on the few (1-5) very hot days we get in the summer.

I'll just have to beat on it a little to get the temps up... maybe I can autocross it on Saturday instead of my 912... :p

[Canadian car with oil temp in metric... 100C = 212F]

My 77 911S (so far!) has never come close to overheating. The hottest it has ever got was about 102-3 C for a few minutes after 3 hours on a very hot July afternoon. The average (day) summer engine temp seems to be around 93-95 C ... and only after about 1/2 hrs driving.

I've just had the car tuned up (it was running a bit rich) and the hottest I've see it has been about 88-90 C. It's a cooler rainy day today, and the engine temp didn't even hit 80C.

All this with the old 5-blade fan and no front oil cooler. Although, the thermal reactor(s?) were removed years ago.

My Daily Driver

Here is my daily driver parked at work. Of course a PO replaced the 2.7 with a 3.0. It has almost 170,000 miles. Why drive anything else!?

MAS, you're lucky! They're the same sort of oil temps I get, but I've had to get a Carrera Oil cooler, 11-blade fan, HeetSheets etc etc.

Well, I drove it today... verdict: I'm in love! The car comes with a binder full of receipts, the most surprising one was for an engine rebuild (etcetera) in 1988 to the tune of $14K US! The car also received $4K worth of top end work last year. The engine's now 10.3:1 and really cranks when asked... amazing. Anyway, here's the car with MAS' 77 Targa... even a dreary west coast day looks bright behind the wheel of a 911!

Will I buy it? Probably... have to get haggling with the owner now. Will update as details surface.

:D

Buy it! Before I do. :)

MAS 09-14-2003 01:36 PM

Hey... nice looking Targa! ;)
