Well the sad news: I made an offer of $12K on $14,500 and the owner refused. Went up to $13K and still nothing. I've seen other mid-year 911's at this price that don't need paint so I think my offer wasn't bad. Apparently, he bought the car for about $15K 2 years ago and has sunk $6K into it since then. This explain why he won't budge on the price. Sigh... the search continues. :(

bigchillcar 09-18-2003 06:20 PM

As much as I love the mid-year car, mine in particular, he paid too much to start with if he's sunk 6k into and it still needs paint. He should have taken the 12k and run unless he really loves the car and truly doesn't want it to sell. How did he spend the 6k again?

Sellers loss and your gain. You will find a better, newer car...perhaps a Carrera for the money that you are offering.

The seller is dumb, by the way...because he is confusing maintanance costs ($6K) with upgrades. There is a huge difference and maintanance costs are just part of owning a classic 911. If you can't afford them, then you shouldnt own the car...and those costs really do not count into the actual market value of the car.

You will find a better car. :)

Just give it a week or so and then give him a casual follow-up phone call.

Be polite and remind him of your offer. I'll bet that it's eating at him that he didn't take your offer, but he doesn't want to lose face by calling you up.

Give it a try. You might be surprised!

adam is on the right track,,,contact him again and ask him nicely what would he take for the job and explain your reservations,, the are is 28 years old, though documented you cant be sure that the engine wont blow up the moment you sign the papers, you may need a clutch etc. if he wont budge say ok and pay him 14.5 and enjoy it.

Is that Cdn or US? If US, he's way high.

bigchillcar 09-18-2003 08:11 PM

Good point, Mark...I was assuming US dollars.

Btw, I see it's had the dilavar studs out into it. How many miles ago and how many on the car total? Did they use timecerts and helicoils when they put in the studs? Records should say if complete. Were the valve guides replaced?

Answers:

-Yes, Canadian funds so the price isn't too out of line?
-engine rebuilt in 1988 (which is a long time ago, I know) and had Time-serts and Dilavar studs installed. No oil leaks anywhere so I'm confident that they're holding for now. I know the Case-savers and steel (or Raceware) studs are a better fix but I think that what was done was state-of-the-art 15 years ago
-of the $6K, $4K was a top-end rebuild due to sticky valves in the guides. Everything was refreshed and the engine now seems perfect. $1K was in required 'safety' fixes (light bulbs, heater blower, power window switch, etc, etc) when he brought the car into BC from Virginia. The other $1K was in stereo upgrades.

I will be calling him again next week just to turn the thumbscrews a little... I really liked the car. I think that I wouldn't have been as taken with it had it had a shiny new paint-job on it. At least with worn-out, cracked original paint, the car isn't hiding anything that a cheapo Maaco spray can. Plus, I really dig those right-out-of-the-barn cars with the patina of age in the paint... there's a story for every scar.

Dude....it may be the only silver Porsche in BC...but damn...its not the only silver Porsche on the face of the Earth, or the Pac. Northwest for that matter.

Look around, dont settle on paying that much for a car with potential issues....

Oops, didnt see the one behind it. ;)

My point is...dont fall in love with one car...there are others out there with owners quite willing to make a sweet deal.

exc911ence 09-18-2003 09:11 PM

Oh I know... but that face!!! :D Whew... I need to sit down.

I'm still not convinced that steel studs are the way to go with a mag case. If your rebuilding a 3.0 case then by all means get rid of the dilivar and go steel but the mag cases are more prone to distort from stud tension when the cylinders heat up quicker than the studs.

It took three years for Porsche to realize the problem and when they came up with a fix for it they were already into building the aluminum case motor.

"Gee, what should we do with all these dilivar studs Fred?"" I don't know Max. I guess let's stick them on the bottom row until we get rid of all of them."

Hi all,

First, exc911ence good luck in your quest. From hanging out on this forum it seems that there are many good buys for the mid-year 911s.

Second, since I have a good mid-year 911 audience, I would appreciate your thoughts on upgrading 15 inch cookie cutters to fuchs on a 1977 911s. I understand 16x6 and 16x7 may work.

Thanks, Tim

exc911ence 09-19-2003 06:52 AM

The 16's will fit fine. I've got 15x7's on all corners of my 1969 which shares the same body with the mid-year cars and I have no clearance issues.

"... perhaps a Carrera for the money that you are offering..."

Where, where? These are Canadian $$$, so 14K Canadian is a tad over $10K US.

47silver,
I believe the mirror was an option, but even if not, sometimes people will have it installed.
