Project Elephant - Battery relocation and fire suppression
I'm a bit behind in posting updates. The car has actually progressed quite a bit since this work was completed.
The battery has been relocated to the smugglers box. A cutoff switch installed with driver and outside activation. A fire suppression system has also been installed. click for more The tiny battery (15 lbs) and improved weight distribution will help performance. The cutoff switch and halon system will help ease my distaste for burning in a firey death.

Very cool. Can't believe you still have the clock.

Chuck:
Just spent some time looking at the entire project (so far) on your website. My God man, is that as clean as you can get your car?!?! I mean really...you need to tighten up. Seriously, it's gorgeous. You've really done an incredible job! I love all the new paint, plating and fasteners. The best comment I can give you is that is looks factory or better. Can't wait to see the finished product. You've really done a first rate job and should be rightly proud of this car. Good luck with the final details.

What a beatiful car.
One question: I notice you've got a halon jet right by steering column. Isn't halon toxic? Or is it "dangerous" just because it displaces oxygen?

Halon is definitely not good for you but neither is fire (BTDT), I’ll take Halon.
The only real danger is if you were stuck in an enclosed space w/ Halon (like a car) for an extended amount of time (relatively). If you are unconscious, you won’t get to the handle. If it’s auto, hopefully somebody will come along to get you out in a hurry. Can’t wait to see the car at the AF Chuck, it looks great!

I cannot believe your adding in the weight of a fire suppression system! Good God man! It must weight 10lb at least.... thats roughly equal to an entire horsepower! It could ultimatley cost you 1mph on a long straight or even 0.001 sec from your best laptime!
Fiery death is underrated! It wouldnt hurt for very long and you may even get on TV! Get your priorities straight and get that dead weight OUT! Terry

Thanks for the comments. I'm building the car the way I want it to be, it's sure not a concourse contestant. It's not a full-on wheel-to-wheel race car, hence no cage, full interior and yes a clock. Cosmetics are several notches above a full race car.
It is a time-trial car / Rgruppe car that will see the street and lots of track time. The mods are not factory but they are appropriate IMO. Interior is spartan - straps to raise the plastic windows, no radio in site. But it is a full interior with carpert, dash and basic Door panels. I'll be rigging up at least basic heat though all the factory stuff is likely to be left out. In short it's a lightweight slightly de-tuned race car with a nice coat of paint, sparten interior, few creature comforts, a license plate - and a lot of attitude!

In lieu of a fire suppression sytem in Scruffy, I keep a bag of marshmallows and some Jiffy-Pop in the glove compartment when I'm at the track.
That way, I can make the best of a bad situation, and I and the corner workers can enjoy freshly popped popcorn and lightly toasted yummy marshmallows while we wait for the ambulance to arrive.

Too Funny! Chuck, Very cool car and I love the battery idea...has me thinking.

A Beautiful car and great documentation! You make it look easy! It would be extremely useful if, when you are finished, you listed the source and price of all the goodies you've added and the things you've done. I love to watch projects like this emerge and wish I could do it myself.
John
