i'd go with a ferrari dino, an austin healey, or a late 60's era jag e type. my father's got the new V6 NA audi S4 and it is pretty impressive performer (replaced the old tricked tt S4) but it doesn't take much skill to drive of course.

This question occupies lots of my daily time.

The question is easier if you're comparing apples w. apples, so lets say I have a late 80's Carrera.

To compete, a substitute car would need: Day to day drivability, reliability and, especially important for me- build quality and strength. Of course it must have a competition pedigree and handle beyond reproach. That rules out most other europeans except for German cars.

See ya later Alfa, Fiat, Ferrari, Renault, Peugeot...whatever.

Have a thing about Japanese cars (mostly that they're so common here, especially the hot ones- Skylines, Subarus, you name it), so they wouldn't feature highly in my wish list either.

Then, it has to be able to be repaired by my own hands and tools wherever possible.

Lastly, a car needs to retain its value, or better still, make $$ come sale time. This excludes new or near new examples of German marques.

My pick then? it's gotta be the E30 M3 Sport Evo.

Hmm, this is a toughie. So many of the other car's listed here would not be on my "realistic" list.

Like an E-type Jag. One of the most beautiful cars ever made, but I wouldn't own one unless I was rich and could afford to have someone else keep it running.

I like the old british sports cars, but I would want something more reliable.

A 240Z could be lots of fun. I road in a tricked out 240Z once that had a lot of spirit, lots of noise, smell, lightweight, fast, sports car handling, but my 911 is my daily driver, so I don't know that the 240 would be my pick.

BMW's are nice, but they don't have the reputation that a Porsche does for reliability.

I may be selling my 911 soon (temporarily a year or two at most), I have been thinking of replacing it with a mid 90's miata for the year or so that I don't have a 911. They should be fairly reliable, not very fast, but they should handle pretty well. Stock only weighing 2200 lbs. I think they are the modern interpretation of the old British sports car.

F-150 with big V-8, AT, A/C, w/7" suspension lift and 35's. The type that a P-car driver would hate to hit or be hit in. Wait - that is what I drive when I am not driving my P-car.

Ah yes, my second love, old American Muscle. Before I bought my 911 I had planned to get an old chevy, drop in a crate motor, some serious suspension mods, and big 4 wheel discs all around. Old world cool, with newer world performance. I would have also considered one of the mid 90's Impala SS's, but after having a 911 I don't know if I could do an Impala SS unless it was my family hauler and I still had a 911 or something small and light.

Seems like a thread to bring about the attention of other interesting cars since most 911 drivers would not be content with just 'transportation.'

I've been facinated with the Olds Aurora, first series with the aluminum OHC V8 and RWD. Black, those cars are timeless in black. Have to get Ed Pink to do an IRL motor for it since he did all the original IRL Aurora motors. With a little tightening of the suspension, that would be one tough gran touring car. All leather interior. Might give you a decent run for your money.

Yeah, no P-car? Then maybe an Olds. Surprised?

Oh, and I had a '96 Impala SS. Too heavy. The Olds is lighter.

Since the 911s are weekenders, it'd be something out of the ordinary and I guess we can't have 928s or 968s, so probably one or two of these BMWs...
