The guy I bought my 3.2 from put a PMO-carbed 3.8 in his '88 Carrera.

Yep I did it, based on a 993 engine and it wasn't cheap. All in all it cost me about 25K with a relative doing all of the work and machine work for free.
The varioram woudln't work right in the 6800 rpm and up range so that has to go which really stinks because from 4500 to 6800 rpm's you really know it's there but when the engine is demanding more air than it can deliver.... Had to go with the dual plenum intake. Also changed the rods and rod bolts, injectors, heads and no more hydraulic lifters, custom cams (awesome mid range) and custom chip. 2 - O2 sensors, headers and flowmasters. It is very loud but sounds like a large loping V8 until you goose it up to 8K. The air this thing pumps through even at idle is unreal, you can feel the pulse of the exhaust standing 12' behind the car. I have a 5MB movie of the car sitting at idle if anyone is interested. I can't post it because I don't have any server space. All in all would I do it agian, NO. The most you will get over a 993 3.6 Vram engine is 60 HP which puts the car at bout 340 to 350 HP. Unlike the asphalt track fanatics on the BBS, I am fast becoming a High HP junkie. The next project is going to be a 500 to 600 HP 89 turbo, a complete (and ongoing) money pit! |

Dont know what specifically your after but I have a 3.8 in my 1989 964 C4. 320HP dealer built. Its fricken fast!

The most cost-effective way is to buy a 3.8.
Of course, this requires a lot of patience, and an expert to check it out for you.

I've got a 3.8 993RS conversion in my '76 Carrera. There are several ways to do this and several optional paths along the way it sort of depends on the intended purpose.
When I started looking in to this Joel Resier had 2 ex Daytona 3.8 RSR engines @ ~ $30k great engines but not suitable for the street. Dave Valliere had several 964 and 993RS @~$20-25K but there was no real documentation and there were some issues with missing pieces. That left either doing a 964 as a 3.8 vram which is being done by one of us who may wish to remain anonymous, or a '95 993 to 3.8, or '96 on 993 to 3.8 I chose to by a '97 euro 993 and have it totaly rebuilt to RS spec Here is a rough cost outline
lots of little labor intensive machine/prep work By careful shopping you can get much better pricing than above, In all cases I paid a little to a lot less but those are the listed prices. For a street car vram is definitely worth it, for a race car I would start w/ a '95 993 The RS 102/107s are fine for street use, but you will want the 102/109 RSRs for a race car. There are other versions of aftermarket p/c available up to 4.2 liters but the cost would make your eyes pop out. The result is an easy 300+ hp and a ton of toque, both 275/40 can all too easily be lit up in the lower gears. Please note that a stock 964 is perfectly compatible w/ stock 911 gearing tires and brakes, ALL of these will need suitable mods w/ the 3.8 it is in a whole different ball park. ![]() Sound bite
