What spares do you take to DE

I'm heading out to my Fourth DE later this month. My track car is also my ride to and from the track so I'm always a little paranoid. I always bring all the necessary tools, but I got to thinking what spares should I be carrying?

Fuses
Rotor
Cap
??
??

What do you guys carry

Jeff C

Spare throttle cable, clutch cable, fan belts, relays. They're all good, and you can rest assured that if you bring them, you won't need them, and vice versa.

Brake Fliud, BRAKE PADS(Especially if you run high speed tracks and the tools to bleed/change pads if nessesary; Watkins Glen, Road America, Sebring etc.). Oil, DME relay if applicable, Driveshaft( I know, it's big but changing CV boots at the track stinks), good quality air pressure guage, wheel lugnut torque wrench. For the driver; 1 gallon of Gatorade( or any other non-alcoholic drink, remember that caffeine dehydrates too), change of clothes(plan on getting sweaty). I find that the most important thing at the track is to take care of the loose nut behind the wheel, this is why I empasize the Gatorade, track drinks are expen$ive. If you do this, then you usually eliminate the need for any car related items since you will be driving well and thus being good to the car. have a great time!! Just for a frame of reference, I drive my car to Club Races so don't feel paranoid.

Cheers, James

I've got a cloth tool bag that's usually in my truck. Sockets, screwdrivers, pliers, vise-grips, yada yada.

I throw it in the car on my way to the track along with a torque wrench and I've got all the tools I, or a friend, might need.

Don't forget the helmet!

I've had trouble with front wheel bearings needing adjustment so the tools necessary to get the dust caps off and the 5mm(?) allen wrench to tighten them back up.

My car is a bit older so I also bring spare cap, rotor, one plug wire, spare trigger and ignition unit, spare pads, brake fluid, lots of oil, duct tape, zip ties.

Paper towels and window cleaner, lots of Gatorade, towel, soap and spare clothes to change into for the ride home.

The one behind the wheel............. That's a good one James!

Point well taken too. I guess you gotta make sure the knucklehead at the helm is as refreshed as possible.

I'm not much of a racer (very little track experience VERY LITTLE = 1), but a good idea is to have some paper towels and some glass cleaner. Clean glass always makes for a better driving experience.

My advice would be to make a list and put it on the garage wall. Put basic stuff on there, along with the must-haves (like your helmet) and check it each time you go. Pretty soon you'll find that certain things on your list never get used and you can pare it down from there. Problem is, Murphy's Law will rear his ugly head at the track and that one thing you crossed off the list last night is now needed! No biggie. Go ask the guy with the trailer, big tool box and RV. He'll have what you need.

I guess it depends on who usually shows up at the track and how well you know them. Of course I bring the essentials as mentioned. Some of my fellow track junkies that make it to all the regular events have actual garages in there trailers that can fabricate and weld. It helps to know if they will be there over time. Motto: Be friendly and help out however you can. The'll do the same for you some day.

Depending on the age of your fuel pump, a spare might be in order.

JB WELD!!! It has saved be at the track before as have ZIP Ties, which are already on your list. Also, flare nut wrenches for bleeding the brakes. I forgot mine and damn near rounded my bleeder nuts off when I was flushing air from my calipers.

I also second what Michael (89911) stated about making friends.
