Engine Oil Cooler Help

Does anyone know if the engine oil cooler can be removed from the engine with out having to drop the motor?

I know the Passenger side headers need to come off, and the fiberglass air flow piece that is on top of the engine shroud needs to come off as well.

Anybody have an answer or maybe shed some light on this for me? And is it a easy task once it is out?

Thanks in Advance!!!

Oh yeah, the car is a 1967 911S.

I don't see why the headers would be in the way. I mean I don't think stock ones would be in the way.
Do all 911's have the removeable piece over the oil cooler or was that a later (than '67) developement?
If you've got leaks in that area, check the case itself behind the oil cooler. I've seen the case leak at the little "window" behind the cooler. I'm not saying it is likely, just be aware that it does happen.

Chris,

These are after market racing headers. I do not think the cooler could make it past the header if I left it on. yes, the removeable peice was added to aid in the cooling.

I have heard that the O-rings at the attachment from the cooler to the case can go bad and cause the leaking I might have. Have you heard of this. Are they easy to replace. And what do you think about the Performance Products aftermarket Engine Oil Cooler they sell for $399.00? I would hate to spend $1300 for a factory cooler if I have to replace it.

What "little window" are you talking about.

The little slot above the lowest hole is the "window" I'm talking about.

Leaks in that area can come from above (oil pressure switch, thermostat O-ring), cylinder base gasket or if you are unlucky, from a leak in the case itself right behind the oil cooler. This motor had leaks from all four places.

You can pull the cooler without pulling the engine. You will need to drop the motor 6 inches or so to get enough working room.

It's not fun, but it's doable.

I can't find a good picture of that location. The case has a big hole (1" diameter or so) that drills down from the top of the case almost to the bottom. The case has a couple of slots/windows that I suppose correspond to the bottom of that hole. Maybe to let the chips out during manufacture? One window is behind the oil cooler, the other window is behind #6 cylinder (I think). The big hole has a pressed-in tube that seals off the "windows" from the outside. After a while, this press fit doesn't seal that well I guess.

You will need to do a partial engine drop and take the rear wheel off to
help access, its a bit of a fiddle manuvering the cooler out, the seals are easy to replace once the cooler is off, if you can it would be worth getting the cooler pressure tested for leaks. I checked mine when I had it off and it had a small pin hole which was causing the leak, not the seals.
