Do you think this 930 has been repainted?

The engine bay decals have been removed. Does it looked like the 930 has been repainted? The 930 is for sale in L.A. at Truspeed, Costa Mesa.

Probably. Key is to find out why. If it was minor damage or just fading paint and it's a quality repaint I wouldn't run from it. On "pimp my ride" or one of those shows, they took a brand new, undamaged BMW X5 and did all kinds of body and paint work on it. My SC was entirely repainted when turbo flares were added. So a repaint does not necessarly mean a wreck.

Yeah, but it sure looks nice. Look in the trunk, door jambs etc.
You have to really inspect it to see for sure.
In the end, if you can't tell, then it doesn't matter--unless the owner is asking a premium for a car that is showroom fresh or something and won't own up to the repaint.

Look around all of the trim, window seals, light etc for overspray, most repaints unless they are big $$$ jobs show overspray somwhere. Also look for "tape" marks where the outside surfaces meet the edge of the inside, like edges of doors and engine lid. Normally they leave the original paint in the door jambs and engine compartment, but a good company will tape off the gaps as to not get paint overspray on the areas that they are not painting. Therefore the will be a slight edge where the tape was. A really, really good shop will sand a buff that edge so you will not notice it.

Since it is black you really cant look for a difference in the color, but you can look for a difference in the "orange peel" of the texture of the surface. Look to see if the surface finish is the same all over the car. This will help you determine if certain areas were repainted.

I have restored and repaint a car black, I took me 1 year to do, if I could see the car in person I would tell you for sure, but alal I am 3,000+ miles away. Good luck.

You could also check carfax for any accident info.

My guess is it was repainted, why else would you remove the decals ?
And why would those be removed in the place ? as they contain important information at a glance.
If it was originally black the paint should have been fine in that area and not need paint. The exceptions would be rear damage or color change.
The decals are available, so any owner with an attention to detail could replace them.

This doesn't mean this isn't a nice car. It just all has to be considered in it's evaluation.

Cool

If you are really looking close, you should take note of the paint code when you are concerned with this aspect.

I'm not sure how a paint code could be conclusive though. It was probably painted the original color. It looks like the standard black/schwarz (L700). The obvious re-spray giveaway is the missing engine decals. The only explanation for those to be gone is a re-spray. The only question is: Did the entire car get shot, or was the car rear-ended, and only the rear was shot/blended? But, I would bet it was a complete re-paint.

I think he is talking about the paint code sticker on the side of the door. If the car has been re-sprayed, the sticker is removed.

The light reflection on the left fender has a "respray" look. From what is shown it looks like a nice job, that engine and the engine compartment sure look great!

Still looking for a descent G50 Targa cheap!

Look at the ends of the "sticker"/ latch sheet metal. You will be able to tell if they have been re-welded to the "drip rails".

Also, look for the same thing on the sheet metal piece running above the rear reflector.

No stickers and new welds may indicate that those panels were replaced from another P-car and the original stickers info would not apply and were removed.

Thus a rear ended situation and a repaint. Not a disaster, but nice to know.

The only way to know for sure is through the use of an elcometer. It will tell you the thickness of the paint on each and every panel. This way you know what panels were resprayed and whether a filler was used. This is the only way to purchase a used vehicle and know for sure what is hidden underneath. A respray is almost always twice as thick as the original factory paint.

As others have said, there are many reasons to respray a car.
I would wonder why the stickers were not replaced, they are readily available and are not expensive.

Look at the taillight lenses.

The right side one is correct for a 930 (black framed surround).
The left side one looks like it was sourced from an early car (clear frame, different red tint).

I wonder why someone would cheap out and use the wrong lens. It would stand out in person, I'm sure. I'm picky and little things like that just don't look right to me...

FWIW my brass tags in the engine compartment are totally faded. If I wanted my car really clean and new looking without knowing any better I would probably just take them off and clean the area really well. So, I suppose they could have been removed for the sake of making the car really clean looking.

Personally if I did this I would have replaced them but some people don't think that way.

1)-Jack up the car and look for new rear ( replaced ) suspension parts.
2)-I found out another place where even a very very good body shop might leave a tape mark& that would be the rain gutters on the roof side,so if you look at the rain gutters from an angle from behind, you might be able to pick that one up.
3)-Paint texture, orange peel vs no orange peel ( better so in a shade ).
4)-If not too sure have a body shop look at the car although they can frequently make mistakes too.
5)-Find out from another owner of the same year car as to where the factory put those stickers ?
