Wierd Hot Start Problem

Hey Pelicans, My 911SC is acting up on me, I drove the 911 the whole day, running errands. I take her out to the grocery store in the evening, and when I get to my house, I shut the ignition off. A minute later, I realized that I need to move my car(don't want to risk any door dings from my neighbors vehicle). So I go to start her up again and she won't start. The motor makes the noise like she wants to turn over, I hear the motor crank but not fire up. It is strange because this problem only happend a few times, and only after being driven hard. I have never had this happen after my 911 had been sitting. From a cold start, my SC fires up real strong, the motor idles at 1300-1200rpm then levels out at 950-1000 rpm. So I left the 911 alone for 3 hours and went outside later, turned the ignition and it started strong as ever. Has anyone had similar start problems that come and go? I have heard about hot start problems being related to problems with the fuel pump and fuel alternator, but both of these parts are fairly new in my car. On a more positive note, I completed my first 911 projects yesterday, changing the brake pads and rotors, wheel bearings, and performing an oil change. I had a friend who is knowledgeable with p-cars help me with these tasks, thanks Dane.

Here are some details as to what my car has: The motor was rebuilt 6,000 miles ago by P.O.'s friend: - all heads rebuilt with all new parts - cams reground by webcam - all new bearings and seals - polished the crank - new time chains and guides - entire rebuild kit from Vertex - low mile p/c set from an 82 SC (the old ones were good, but the PO stumbled onto these with 60K on them. a 82 is also higher compression ratio) - new ignition wires (steel braided) - new turbo valve covers - new fuel pump - new fuel accumulator - new turbo tie rods - pop off valve - carrera chain tensioners - new rebuild on the alternator - nice bilstiens (4) - new sachs clutch pack - re-ground flywheel - all new seals and gaskets in the 915 ( PO inspected the 915, all good) - all new CV joints & boots I had a mechanic adjust the CO to the proper level and set the idle level to correct specs last week. I replaced the spark plugs 3 weeks ago. Last edited by Par911; 10-06-2003 at 08:44 PM..

Fuggetaboutit.....I figured the problem out today, apparently some PO had hacked into the fuel pump wire running from underneath the fuel relay. Whoever did this, chose the cheap route and used a buttonclamp to reconnect the wires instead of replacing them. So the connection was getting loose, causing my 911 to have start problems. I took the car to C&J motors and they are soldering a new wire in. Looks like problem solved.

Pari, Great news! I'm glad you found the problem so quickly. My "starting issues" took several frustrating months to finally resolve. Happy driving!
