Why NLA, but dealer has the part? And Wayne, how about an NLA page per yr. and model

As an outsider to the parts business, I am wondering what the determining factors in a part being NLA, yet still available from the dealer?

My 911 is running excellent, but several of my last orders have been NLA, yet obtained through the dealer. Example: I have an alternator pulley purchased from Pelican, yet the nut NLA (Marchal), was purchased through the dealer.

Secondly, I was wondering if it would be practical to have a seperate NLA page at Pelican, listing year and model, and the NLA parts, and the perhaps soon to be NLA parts listed.

I currently do not need one, however if in the future I need a throttle cable (ball socket type), for a 69 911, is this also NLA?

All the cables I see mentioned in my paper catalogs do not list one for the year 1969.

I've run into this problem as well: the PP phone staff wouldn't even bother to look up the number and the CD didn't have them.
How do you get the parts in this situation? Some have gone somewhere else.

I'm also wondering whether the NLA, might be unique to certain years/models.

Further, as to whether the % of NLAs will increase. Thus it would be nice, for myself, to have a convenient one stop page(s), listing these items.

Some parts can be officially NLA from Porsche, but the major dealers may have stock on hand. In particular, Stoddard is (I believe) the US focal point for "Porsche Classic" and has a special relationship with the factory. They can usually get all kinds of stuff that is unobtainium elsewhere.

a lot of the aftermarket suppliers like worldpac, and IMC, don't list certain things, due to lack of past sales. (76 912e clutch cables for instance). it's a money thing. they're out there, but you rarely sell one, so why stock it. resale outfits that get a lot of what they sell from those warehouses are therefore out of luck, unless they have another source. and there is usually another source, if you shop around, but you can spend a lot of time on the phone, and that again is a money thing.

Here is a list of parts I have already had to obtain either NLA or were difficult to obtain, for my 69 911E :

1. Ignition switch.

2. Marchal alternator pulley nut.

3. Flywheel (this flywheel the starter ring is not seperate, but is part of the flywheel itself)

4. Pressure plate bolts.


It would be convenient, in so far as preparation, to know what is currently and in the future NLA, on one convenient source page(s).

Some of the aftermarket suppliers I probably have never heard of, other than Pelican, and the paper catalog suppliers. Maybe if Pelican does list the NLA, the rep could point us in the right direction???

FYI, we *only* mark a part as NLA if none of our suppliers can get it anymore, AND the Porsche dealer network says that there are no more available in the warehouses in Atlanta or Stuttgart.

If something is marked as NLA, it means that the dealer no longer carries it, and that Porsche has marked it as NLA in their main computer. True, you may find that one of the nearly 240 Porsche dealers in the US might have one in stock, but chances are unlikely.

I'm sure, from time to time that Porsche might bring stuff back off of NLA, but I don't get a list of those. Our salesreps will not look up stuff that is marked NLA, because it is a huge waste of a lot of time - 99% of the time the part is marked NLA because the Porsche dealer network has already told us that it has been discontinued.

We leave NLA parts in the catalog so that people won't call and ask us to look them up - it used to waste a lot of time when we would remove an NLA part from the catalog, and then people would call and ask about it. It takes on average about 15-20 minutes or so to accurately check one of these parts.

I had two dealers refer me to one "nationally" known dealer as a suggestion as to where to obtain my Marchal pulley nut. This well known dealer then proceeded to order the nut from somewhere. (I didn't ask where). Strange that the pressure plate bolts were NLA, but the Sachs clutch was not.

I wonder just how many 1969 911 Es (and Ss) are still on the road, and whether this might be a factor as to make Porsche phase out some of these parts NLA. Seems to me there is a heritage factor here no?

I'm wondering if these sources that are able to get NLA parts are simply substituting something they know will work. Perhaps the "same" nut was used on a Peugeot or something. I would think it would be very difficult to find a purpose built cable that is Porsche only once it was marked NLA. Other things might just be a lucky coincidence depending on the experience and knowledge of the parts guy you are working with.

The nut I checked almost everywhere, fastener specialty suppliers, two other Porsche dealers, even tractor suppliers, nothing. The Porsche dealer I funally got the nut from, supplied it with a "kit" for the alternator.

My accelerator linkage (currently working fine), should I need replacement, I have not found in any of the catalogs (ball and socket type linkage), including at the pedal.

I wonder if some of the reps, if these parts are NLA, could suggest a proper alternative (such as, if feasible, an upgrade).

I wonder what happens if for a 1969 E, a flywheel becomes NLA???
