I just bought a 1982 SC for $10,003 from the owner of the board.
Some assembly required.... But... It was a deal and I knew mechanically is was extremely well put together. Lots of cosmetic issues, but those can be fixed easily, and if you know where, cheaply (Mexico...). I'm very happy with my SC, except that it just doesn't have the same sound as my 914/6. Some here may say the 1982 SC is a bit raw, but it is down right luxurious compared to my very spartan 914/6. I have working A/C. WOOO-HOOO!!! Oh, and don't freak out the first time you break the backend loose in a tight turn

I got my '87 with 246K miles on it and expected a ton of nasty little things to come up and cost me $$. So far I've put 5K on the odometer and have the following expenses:
New tires (Yoko ES 100s) Oil change Alarm CD player Hood shock Only the tires and oil change were absolutely necessary so don't be too worried about having a ton of $$ in reserve.

Hmmm - Screw up?
You mean like the front wheels mounted the wrong direction? Or the reversed vacuum lines on the distributor? Or the rear window we had to tape down with clear packing tape so it wouldn't fly out of the car? Wayne is cool and the car is very nice. Even he is feeling the "Shame of remorse" when he saw the pictures of the car once it had been painted. He's going to feel even worse once I finish the interior this weekend... Of course, he's out of the country, so we can talk.... James

GSpreeman,
An '87 with 246K miles and you put an alarm in it?!! It may be old and have high miles but it's still a Porsche, right? That's why I chose to buy both an SC and an 80's Carrerra when I shopped for a world class sports car! These cars are amazingly durable. |

Poor Idle At least with CIS, you can fix 'em with a few basic tools.

I would not let the lack of an air box pop-off valve or carerra tensioners keep me away from a good car. You can add them for about $600. Just consider the additional expense when you are making your offer. If the tensioners have failed or the airbox has burst, it will be obvious in the PPI. Just don't put off installing these "insurance" mods after purchase because they protect much more expensive parts.

What's surprising about putting an alarm on my 911? For right now the fiance's A4 gets half the garage, my 356 restoration gets the other side and the 911 gets parked in the driveway. I've got a 912 engine on the way so look for a restored '65 356C Coupe coming to stores near you soon! (so, living a stone's throw away from Newark and parking my car in the driveway...an alarm)

Dan:
I'm in the Santa Clarita Valley as well. PM me if you want to come over and spend some time looking at an 84 Targa. I've only had it a few months, but I'll share with you my learning experiences.
