Question Reverse light switch... Which wire goes where?

Looks like the PO did an engine drop without disconnecting the back-up light switch and broke the wires off the two plug ins. Does it matter where the wires are pluged into the switch (the one on the transmission) ? The Bently manual shows the yel/grn comes into the switch and the gry/brn goes to the lights. The switch doesn't have any markings to designate which wire goes where. Should I go the "Trial and Error" route or will that fry the switch?

Doesn't make any difference. The switch is just a connection for the two wires. Think of it as an open circuit. The switch just completes the circuit.

Ooh... I've been meaning to ask this.

After I reassembled my tranny, my reverse lights didn't work. I thought I reversed the wires, so I switched them and they still didn't work. I then removed the switch to see if the contact rod popped out when reverse was selected. It pops out as it should. I still don't have backup lights. What should I check next?

The switch is just a contact closure switch as Kurt stated above. You probably broke a wire when you removed the engine. Put the two ends together and see if your backup lights come on. If not trace the circuit. If the lights some on when you close the circuit, the switch is probably bad.

pull the two wires out and tape them together and see if the reverse lights work. If they do, something is messed up with your switch. If they don't work it is either a fuse, burned out bulbs or a bad connection somewhere in the line.

Always, Have you tried cleaning the plugs and receivers with emory cloth/ sand paper? Maybe they just have a biuld up of corrosion. If not swap the switch with a known good one (Maybe someone can chime in how to test it), check fuse, check light bulb connection, or common ground.

test the switch...put trans in reverse and run a continuity test...or just close the loop with the wire ends as I described above.

lotsa knowledge on this 99 cent switch is all I have Kurt..everything else pretty is useless

My switch works on the bench, but when installed, and reverse is engaged, it won't shut off. Could it be that the spring in the switch is not strong enough to push the pin back? The spring feels fairly stiff, so could there be an issue with the trans?

I havn't tried a new switch (yet)
