Loctite vs Permatex equivalency

Are there any Permatex equivalents of Loctite 574 case sealant and Curil-t sealant. Anybody know if Permatex 515 or 517 anaerobic sealant are equivalent to Loctite 574. I'm having problems finding the sealants recommended in Wayne's book.

The FAA-approved replacement for Loctite 574 is Loctite 518 ... available at most NAPA stores.

Pelican carries the 574.

Problem is I just completed a pelican order a while ago, getting one tube of 574 accross the border will cost more in shipping an duty than the value of the material, NAPA stores are scarce up here so I'm still looking.

Wurth makes an equivelant to 574. In fact it may actually be 574. It looks the same and comes in similar (but different size) container. Try http://www.wurthcanada.com/

Notice how the part # for this stuff is 518xx

I wasn't planning to use this stuff, just curious if it's the equivalent of the other Loctite/Dirko/Dow Corning products that have been mentioned before

If you look on the Permatex package for these sealants it will say "Made by Loctite".

Yes. I did notice the Loctite info. on the blue and red threadlocker that I have by Permatex. Why use two different brands for the same product?

Just wasn't sure if this sealant is the same as the Loctite stuff (it's not orange you know............ )

Guess I should have looked a little harder and checked out the Permatex TDS (tech. data sheet).

The Red stuff (Loctite/Permatex 518) is not the same stuff as the Orange stuff (Loctite 574/Wurth equiv).
Totally different taste...

Thanks for the clarification and the link to the Loctite data sheets (not that I know what all that chemical mumbo jumbo means.................. )

I'll stick to the Loctite stuff since they seem to be more specific about the different designations for their stuff. Permatex is kinda general in nature.

Wayne, My experience with cross border shipping has been unpredictable. I think it is a problem on this side of the border. Canada Post's courier service is Purolator Courier. It seems that sometimes even though I think a package is going the mail route, Purolator seem to unilaterally pick up the package at the border. Once that happens not only duty is applied (which on a $20 CDN) package is only a couple of bucks)you end up paying brokerage fees which can run $20-$30.

Thanks for all the technical references guys, It never seems to amaze me. The breadth and depth of talent, knowledge and willingness to share is awesome on this board.
