930S with embossed crest--anyone know?

I'm pretty sure I've seen a picture of the 930S steering wheel with an embossed Porsche crest on the horn pad. It may have been on one of those "special wishes" cars in an old Excellence or something...

Does anyone know a) where to get a 930S horn pad like that, or b) where to get the plain leather on my current one embossed?

John
There's one pictured here on this thread. It looks like pelican's got them.

Looks like a badge that's screwed in or glued.

The embossed pad looks like an older factory wheel.

RallyJon 10-24-2003 06:16 AM

The colored crest on the 930S wheel in that thread is a stick-on piece.

Actually, the stock wheel (Rob's "old" wheel) pictured in that thread has the embossed crest I want for my 930S wheel.

Jon,

The factory did custom embossing on different parts of the car such as the headrests. I can't recall seeing a embossed horn pad.

The hunt continues.

Would you consider a custom embroidered pad instead? Perhaps in black thread?

Jon,

I believe www.ajusa.com sells seperately both the 930S steering wheel and crest. You can sometimes find them on Ebay. Pelican may carry the crest as well.

Jon,

I could swear that several years ago when AJ USA began selling their repro "930S" wheels that they all came embossed with the crest, and that the cloisonne item (356 hood crest?) was a separate extra cost option. Sometime later (and long before Wayne began carrying what he once referred to as the "strangely popular" 930S wheel at Pelican) the embossing vanished and the hornpad was only available plain, as I recall. Could have coincided with the time that Porsche got serious with trademark protection...

Porsche did produce a similar (and more attractive, IMO) wheel for the 968 CS that had one piece leather construction and an embossed horn pad:

I thinks its still available from Porsche, but you would certainly have to purchase the entire wheel, not just the embossed horn pad, which then may or may not be compatible with the repro 930S wheel.

Good luck,
Tim

Thanks for the info, Tim. :)

It turns out the 968 ClubSport steering wheel horn button is listed with it's own part number: 96834705900. According to the parts manual, 8YR is the suffix for black. Pelican lists it for a mere $56.09 here.

I would like to verify that it has the crest, but if so I'm all over it!

How much would the full steering wheel run? I was looking for the same wheel without that accordian thingie for my 911. I ordered a RUF wheel and sent it back due to the accordian thing as well.

Doesn't anyone make a 930S type wheel, with the embossed crest in black that is a full wheel that fits a 911 without that horrid accordian adapter?

sweeeet.
Jon- make sure you post if you find out the deal here & if it fits the 930s wheel. I don't own enough gold jewelry to complement my tacky gold crest.

RallyJon 10-27-2003 10:52 AM

Well, Pelican didn't know anything about it, so I decided to risk $56 in the interest of educating the community. :D

Even if it doesn't fit exactly, if it's black and has the crest I can use the leather to re-do my horn pad.

Wow, thanks for stepping up to the plate on this RallyJon. I'll be buying one along with the 930S wheel, if the horn pad looks like the one in the picture Tim supplied...and it fits the 930S wheel. Let us know what happens. Thanks!

RickM 10-27-2003 11:34 AM

Jon,

Can't the two horn pad be compared? They look very similar.

RallyJon 10-27-2003 11:53 AM

Looks pretty damn close to me. The big question is whether that part number is actually the black 968 CS pad as shown in the picture above. Did Porsche even sell the 968 CS in the U.S.?

"I could swear that several years ago when AJ USA began selling their repro "930S" wheels that they all came embossed with the crest..."

PAG protecting its IP might have something to do w/it, but the OEM place that makes these wheels varies them periodically for some reason. I think that's the diff. btween the plain pad/add on crest and builtin crests -- also stitching varies a bit here and there.

Now -- how about some way to get rid of that ugly accordian thing -- or least make it play a worthwhile tune?

RickM 10-27-2003 12:40 PM

I bought my wheel from AJ when it first came out and I ended up with the "beautiful" gold crest. I don't recal if the embossing was available at the time.

If Pelican has the 930s wheel in stock and the embossed horn pad then can they check it for compatibility?

RallyJon 10-27-2003 12:53 PM

The 968 CS horn pad is special order only, non-returnable, and definitely not stocked by Pelican.

NoLift911 10-27-2003 01:48 PM

I would pay handsomely for a 930S wheel without the accordian dealio...that fits my 84 Carrera. Does anyone know what a real 930S wheel looks like on a 911? Anywhere these are still available?

So, is someone ordering one of these to find out??

This is highly cool...

Count me in too!

I'm getting ready to order another 930S wheel (I let my other one go with my SC), but I was going to go with the silver/platinum crest, as opposed to the gold crest.

I saw the embossed wheel on a 968 pictured in Excellence, and thought the same thing. The wheel looks suspiciously similar to the 930s, and if you could get the 930s wheel, and order that embossed pad separately (if it fits of course), that would be the mac daddy of wheels, 'cause it would be "factory"!!!
